If You Can’t Beat Em…

I don’t know how legit this is, but Matt Maher tweeted an interesting article today stating that Apple might be planning to create a software that disables your phone’s camera when you try to video live events like concerts.  Really Apple?  The company that created the serving-size record?  Now you want to crack down on ‘sharing’?

Here’s the thing.  The Music Industry can continue pointing fingers at technology for the loss of their revenue or they can simply embrace that this is a different age and there’s nothing they can do about it.  People are going to share music.  There’s no way around it.  People are going to record your concerts with their phones.  It can’t be stopped.  And if I were an artist, instead of focussing on what needs to stop, I’d spend a little time making sure that my show was the absolute best experience that it could be so when folks see a crappy phone video version of it online, they’ll do anything they can to be at the show the next time I’m in town.

The folks that built horse carriages were probably pretty upset about things when the car came along, but at some point they needed to realize that technology had passed them up and if they were going to keep things going, they needed to adapt.  This is no different.  Apple won’t save the music industry (that they helped alter) because their camera’s magically stop working at shows.

My advice to artists?  Put on a better show. Blow people’s minds and let them share how awesome you are and see what happens.

Live In Concert

concert

I’ve seen a lot of concerts.  Most of them I’ve been working at, but before that I tried to go to concerts as much as I could.  Obviously when I was younger I was subject to whoever came to town and wasn’t really able to “travel” to shows and even now it’s not really cost effective to be a traveling fan.  But with all this U2 talk going around it got me thinking.  What are some bands that you just “have” to see once in your life?

I mean, sure The Beatles would fall in that category for most people.  I missed out on that.  And I’m sure it’s different for everyone.  See, for me, I’d love to see Ben Folds live at least once.  Eventually I’d like to see Coldplay, and probably U2 just for the simple fact of seeing them. Damien Rice was one, but Kristin and I went to see him last year.  Really other than that, off the top of my head, I can’t think of an artist that it would be absolutely imperative to go see.

So I want to hear your list.  What artists do you think it’s absolutely necessary to go see in your lifetime?  They don’t have to be these music legends or anything, but maybe they’re just high up on the list of a show you want to see.

Ready?  Go.

Winter Wonder Slam

Last night Blue, Aiden and I picked up Randy and went to check out Toby’s Winter Wonder Slam.  This was the third time seeing the tour, but the first time I was able to bring both of the boys.  They were pretty excited about seeing Family Force Five (who’s page takes forever to load because it’s a lame Myspace page) and they delivered.  Both boys were sitting straight up pretending to play the drums and making sure to ‘get their hands up’ at the appropriate times.

Thanks to Culmer and Nick, the boys had a great place to sit on the lighting platform so being short didn’t matter.  Aiden made it the whole night, but Blue faded out before Toby finished and slid back in his chair and went to sleep.

All in all it was a great show, I love the boys being at an age where we can do things like that together.  Today they woke up and started playing drums and pretending they’re in a band.  On the menu today is some late night recovery of watching movies and maybe some Christmas decorating.

Anyone catch Toby’s tour this year?  What’d you think?

Stats Suck Sunday – In Bullet Points

  • My Fantasy Football team is reflective to my knowledge of football.  I’m losing to Mike Scheuchzer pretty bad right now.
  • It was Tomlin day at church today.  That guy is connected to some pretty decent worship songs.
  • I broke my D string on the third song, second service.  At least I still have my G string.
  • I know it sucks to work fast food, but how hard is “No Tomatoes”?
  • I’m debating heading out to the Switchfoot, Third Day show tonight.  I’ve heard it’s a great show.
  • Blue and I are going to play guitar hero instead of watching football.  My attention span is pretty short when it comes to losing.
  • If I end up going to the show tonight I’ll be hanging out with this fellah, but hopefully he doesn’t bleed on me or anything.

There it is folks.  My Sunday.  Pretty exciting huh?  What’s your plans for the day?  Anything awesome?
