TwitChange: The Peak Of Narcissistic Giving
And we thought The (RED) Campaign caught heat for making a play on America’s consumerism to help a charity. Now it’s beyond consumerism and going straight for the throat of America’s narcissism.
What Is TwitChange: The only global celebrity auction where Twitter users can bid to get three things: be followed by their favorite celebrity on Twitter, retweeted, or mentioned by them in a special tweet!
I started this post with the intention of ‘giving it the benefit of the doubt’, but the more I’m looking into it the more I’m having a hard time not just laughing at it. Sure, $540k was raised for Haiti on America’s desire to be noticed, but are we really looking at this thing? I mean seriously. How bad is my self image if I’m essentially paying the Blue’s Traveler Guy to mention me on Twitter? Or maybe he’ll ‘notice’ me for a month and follow me on there and see what kind of coffee cup I am using that day. Is this what it takes now to get America involved?
Now, I’m sure there was obviously a decent “idea” behind this, but I’ve been reading a lot about “ideas” lately and it seems like with the way the Internet is growing “ideas” can become a reality way before they are thought though enough to be legitimate things.
Last night I had a lengthy conversation with Brenden Mulligan (the founder of Artist Data) about being the “idea guy” and the problems that arise when the idea isn’t executed properly, or there’s no one there to put the nuts and bolts together to make a proper product. Now obviously the nuts and bolts of something like TwitChange was executed properly, but where was the person in the background saying, “Just because we can, doesn’t necessarily mean we should.”? *More on that in another post.
Has any one else seen this thing? Any other opinions out there about this? I’m completely willing to accept the idea that there are people that disagree with me on this one, but to me, this just has a weird vibe. You? And has anyone heard what Twitter feels about this? It doesn’t seem like something they’d get behind. But I could be wrong.
Social Networking Spaghetti Toss
Originally I was going to classify this post in the Dear Christian Music Industry section but the more I thought about it, I realized, I think it goes way beyond that. While I primarily work in the ‘Christian Music Industry’, I think when it comes to “Social Networking” there is so much going on that to pin-point it to one section of one industry doesn’t seem fair.
The bigger SkörInc gets and the more client promotion things we are behind, the more I get asked about different aspects of the web. I was asked the other day, when it comes to Social Networking, how do I know when something will work. How do I know that this campaign will be more effective than that campaign? How do I know where to lay my ‘chips’ that day? I thought it was a pretty interesting question considering things are so new and it seems like we are in a stage of the game where there’s a crazy amount of options for promoting things.
If I’m honest, I don’t.
No one does. And if they say they do, they are full of it.
Sure there’s self-proclaimed guru’s out there that will write their bullet-pointed blog posts about what has worked for them, and what they think will work for you. In the music industry there’s the ‘in-house’ label team that has done their homework and will recommend what they saw Coldplay do and it worked for them. There are even independent companies like SkörInc who’s sole priority is to focus on what we think is going to be the next best step. And we may have some of it figured out, but with things changing so fast, we’re all playing catchup. I think all these avenues have value, but when it comes down to it we are all saying the same thing. “Here’s what worked in this situation, but there’s really no way of knowing it will work in any other situation.”
In fact in the music industry, more than once, I’ve described any Social Networking strategy as throwing noodles against a wall and seeing what sticks, and I think there’s a couple reasons for that. Most importantly, not every artist is the same. What is successful with MercyMe may not work with Amy Grant and what brought Shane & Shane all sorts of attention isn’t going help The Afters one bit. Sure, there might be some overlap, but if fans of artists aren’t the same what makes us think that we can have a checklist of “promotion actions” that will work for different artists. It’s a different playing field than it’s ever been and it’s changing not only daily but with each “online personality”.
Another reason I think it’s a little like throwing spaghetti is simply the fact that there might be too many options. From the beginning of SkörInc I’ve believed one thing. Your online value is in your Real Estate. Myspace came and went, and is now fighting it’s way back. Facebook showed up and exploded with personal pages, then came the “Fan” page (which threw a wrench in the artists with personal pages), now we’ve switched to “Liking” things. Twitter quickly became a valuable connection piece that, almost as quickly, became a way to pimp products and now we are auctioning off Celebrity mentions or “Follows”. We’re doing “Fan Only Content” on Facebook, where you can only see certain things if you “Like” the artist. We’re doing “Tweet to Win” type of contests, widgets, now we’ve got Gowalla and Four Square involved. The list goes on. Spaghetti. Good spaghetti, but still spaghetti.
All of this is moving and changing, but one thing that isn’t going anywhere is (A.) The Internet and (B.) An Artist Brand. The biggest question that the music industry should be asking themselves is ‘where is that brand being built?’. If it’s not at the artists Real Estate (their website) something is wrong and eventually you’ll be chasing another rabbit down another hole. Sure it’s awesome to have a massive number of Twitter Followers, or Facebook Fans, or plays on Myspace, or whatever… but how is that building something that will last?
So here’s my point in all of this. We don’t know what will work. Plain and simple. It’s a crap shoot. It really is. You think Ok Go knew that filming themselves running around like idiots on treadmills would have over 52 million views and launch a legitimate, successful career? Heck no. And I’m willing to bet that wasn’t part of the ‘marketing plan’ either. It was spaghetti that happened to stick. Then you go to their website where there’s more videos like the one that went viral. Real Estate.
So I think with more and more “experts” popping up it’s best to keep one thing in mind. We’re all standing here with our pots of freshly cooked spaghetti just waiting for someone to give us the opportunity to start throwing.
Black Eyed Horrible Song
Okay, does anyone else think this song sounds like something that would be on Wayne’s World or something equally as cheesy? Now, obviously I know the Black Eyed Peas aren’t necessarily known for their prophetic poetry, but this is just embarrassing.
What’s the worst lyrical song you’ve ever heard. I’m not sure if this is my worst, but it’s pretty close.
Next Level Tour Pages
Okay, so remember when I said I was a little ‘geeked’ out about what we were working on for MercyMe’s Tour Page? Well, it actually worked and our first working model is up and running. Now, I know most of you are like, “yeah cool Brody, you’ve got some new buttons on there. Big whoop”. Here’s the deal, I’m willing to say it out loud right here on this blog, or more accurately type it out loud, that this tour page is an absolute game changer in the way that tour pages are done. Here’s why. In true Michael Hyatt fashion, I’ll give these points numbers.
1: Visual Mapping: We’ve seen the maps before. We’re certainly not the first to use this capability, but I still believe it’s rare enough to mention. We are all visual people when it comes to the Internet. No more scrolling though dates looking for my city. I know where I live in America. I look there and if there’s a pin, I’m going. Not to mention it helps with directions to the venue.
2: Creating Local Community: See those little faces on there? Those are your peers. Those are the people in your town, going to the same show that you are going to. You might not know them but they live near you, and they are interested in the same concert experience as you. And you can see them and get to know them. They have RSVP’d just like you and now you can see them directly on the tour page. Game. Changer.
3: Gowalla: Location based stuff. Yeah, it’s the ‘hot new thing’ right? Well with Gowalla we have the capability of creating “Trips”… or the music industry likes to call those “Tours”. Yes I know folks this is revolutionary stuff. Well guess what? You can now “check in” at the shows letting us know you’re there. And when we know you’re there, we can give you things. Have you ever “checked in” at Best Buy and gotten a free pair of Toms Shoes? Me neither, but I know someone who has. I don’t have details, but let’s just say, if I were you I’d be checking in at some MercyMe shows this tour.
So that’s it as far as the tour page goes, but I’ll tell you this. MercyMe’s LOVEWELL LIVE Tour starts tomorrow, and we’ve got some massive stuff planned. Along with checking in, we’ll have some cool things going on at the show which may or may not include something you’d need this for. Just sayin.
The Bro Rock
Now, let me start off by saying that I don’t know either one of the guys pictured above. I don’t know their personalities, I don’t know their families, and to be honest I had to Google one of their names. That being said, the one thing I know is that I can’t stand their music. Now, I’m not saying that you, the reader of this post, can’t like their music, but it’s what I can’t help but call “bro-rock”. You know those guys right. They are the guys at the high school or college parties that are trying to open beer bottles with their teeth or punch you in the arm too hard when saying ‘hi’ and calling you ‘Bro’.
Well, as most of you probably know, Bart caught a bunch of crap on Twitter for simply saying that he doesn’t like Creed. All of the sudden people were bashing his Christianity, his looks, his ministry. It was pretty unbelievable, actually. The funny thing was, most of the people bashing him were focussing on how ‘hot’ Scott Stapp was or something similar. Seems like they have a pretty deep fan base.
Anyway, if you’ve followed this blog or my Twitter at all you know that when I’m on the road I have a strict ‘No Nickelback’ rule on the bus. That obviously goes for the house too. Creed is right there too, but I don’t know if I’ve ever been as passionate about it.
So here’s my question today. We all have music that we strongly dislike. That doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it bad to you. So what’s your absolute least favorite style of music? And yes, bro-rock is a genre…. I think.
New Twitter Layout
So Twitter is rolling out this new layout. So far it’s not available to everyone, but from what I can tell this thing is going to be pretty sweet. And by pretty sweet, I mean, cool if I’m ever looking at Twitter.com for anything. What I’m hoping is that Twitter is using this as a stepping stone to creating a ‘TweetDeck-like’ desktop application that I can have sitting on my desktop. I’m sure it’s in the works.
Clearly there’s some cool stuff going on here though. It’s taking Twitter.com to the next level for sure. I love the idea of seeing responses and images all in one place. I just don’t want to have to keep the website open all the time.
Anyway, how many of you look at Twitter at Twitter.com? Do you think this will change the way you watch what’s going on with Twitter? Good idea or pointless?
The New SkörInc.com
Well, if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you probably saw yesterday that the new SkörInc.com launched. We’re super excited to start taking things to the next level. We’ve got some fun ideas for different sites as well as what we will be doing with some of the artists on the road. Lots. Anyway when you get a sec, head over to the new site, poke around, let me know what you like, don’t like, or anything else. Jordan did an amazing job on this build so he needs some love.
Also, we’ve got a new blog over there as well so it’s probably going to show up a little less here, and more over there when it’s Skör related material. Other than that it’s back to your regularly scheduled web browsing. Have a great Thursday.
The Afters – Light Up The Sky
Today’s the day folks. Today The Afters finally release their new record “Light Up The Sky”. These guys have been an absolute blast to work with and I can’t wait to see what this record does. And while we’re at it, let’s talk about this record a little bit. Okay, for real? This thing has been on repeat in our car for a couple months and (aside from the new Brandon Flowers record that also came out today, but that’s another post) it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. It’s a fantastic record. **I’ve decided to start using the word ‘fantastic’ more.
So here we are. At this place that we’ve been many times before. It’s time to start spreading the word about this fantastic record. Too much ‘fantastic’?
Oh yeah, I also wanted to tell you guys about the new page we added to The Afters site appropriately titled “Light Up The Sky”. This page is asking for you to tell your stories of how God has shown himself to you recently and when you do that it, quite literally, ‘lights up the sky’. It’s almost like magic.
Anyway. Go check out the site, go get the record and spread the word like crazy. Sound good? Go.
Introducing Penny
So this is Penny. We planned on waiting a little while to get a new puppy, but we starting looking online for them and noticed this cool breed. We knew we wanted a Shepherd mix, but nothing was jumping out at us. Until yesterday when Kristin found an ad for four Shepherd mix puppies found in a barn and now currently at a “foster home” about 30 minutes away.
I called the number on the ad and the lady told me that the mom of these puppies was an English Bulldog and the dad was a German Shepherd. Immediately I thought those would be super funny looking adults and we probably should get one.
They said they had two boys and two girls. Three of them looked the exact same and there was one that looked more German Shepherd. Kristin has been needing some female companionship in the house for a while so we decided to go for a girl. Penny was the one that looked different than all the others, and looked like she’d be a good fit in the family. A couple hours later and all the sudden there’s a new member of the family.
I’ve never been super picky about breeds or anything like that, but since Luther was such an amazing dog and a Shepherd mix, how could we go wrong? And when it comes to Penny, with a face like this, how could we say no? So let’s hear it. What’s your favorite breed of dog out there? We’ve got ours.
How Do You Browse?
So, I’ve been playing around with different browsers recently, and I wanted to throw this out there. Up to this point I’ve been a pretty loyal Safari guy and here’s why. My reasoning is totally shallow and completely ‘un-tech’, but I don’t care. I figure if I’m using Safari on my Mac, wouldn’t I go with Apple’s browser? And to take it a step further, I’m using Safari on my phone (because it’s Mac’s browser). Consistency right? Well this past week I’ve been having some issues with Safari and I’ve been playing with some different browsers landing on Google Chrome.
Now I’m not completely sold on it yet, but it has taken it’s permanent place in my computers dock, so we’ll see what happens. It’s throwing me off a little just because I’m so used to things, but I’m kind of liking it.
What browsers are you using? Any argument why I should be using one over the other or is it just a preference thing?
