A Night With Patty Griffin
I only have three pictures like this. You know the type. The ones where you’re standing next to someone ‘famous’ or ‘recognizable’ and want to capture that moment of meeting them. One is with Sixpence None The Richer back when I was in High School, one is with Jars Of Clay from when I first moved to Nashville and this one.
There’s a couple reasons I only have three of these types of pictures. One being, because I always, yes always, look super awkward. I look awkward because taking a picture like that is awkward. It’s weird to stand there and know that you are taking a picture with someone.
The other reason I only have three of these pictures is because I feel weird asking for them. Like the time I was walking through the Nashville airport and saw this guy named Barack Obama standing in the store where you buy bottled water and over priced peanut M&M’s. Yeah, kinda wishing I had the guts to ask for that picture, but I’ll get it next time. Or like the time I had lunch with Vince Gill and had the guts to ask him to pass the chicken, but not the guts to ask for a quick photo. Again, I’ll get it next time. Or the time I sat next to Randy Jackson on a plane and got an autograph for my mom, but felt weird asking for a picture with me. Or the time I was at Panera and got up to leave and Ben Folds was sitting at the table next to me. Or the time we were at J. Alexanders and Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman walked in. Yep, no pictures…. Because it’s awkward.
Well, last night I wasn’t going to let another one of those times pass. I mean, I’m in a studio sitting around a table chatting with Patty Griffin about how we thought the web-cast we just did went. Who does that? And who doesn’t document it somehow?! Not me. Not this time.
Anyway, we had a great time, the web-cast thing went great. There was a great camera crew, obviously the band sounded amazing and Patty was super nice and easy to work with. So I’ll call it a success.
Okay, so let’s hear it. Who do you have “that picture” with? Ready? Go.

You.
I got nuthin.
Really? Probably Charlie Hall. And I have no idea why! Didn’t fill awkward getting a pic with Jeremy Camp at the RAWRS, but Charlie Hall? I felt O.L.D.
Snow Patrol. But I wish with all my heart it was Bono.
Jars, Matthew West, Warren Barfield, Lincoln Brewster, Another Worship Band, NeedtoBreathe, David Crowder, and…
wait for it…
Fabio.
Rob Bell. Most awkward thing ever. But I’m glad I have it. Much respect for that guy.
You! hehe
Hmmmm. Jenny Simmons from Addison Road is one of my favs. The members of Skillet, Needtobreathe, and Building 429. Dave Coulier. Trent Monk of Monk & Neagle. Hana Pestle… she opened for Sister Hazel once. I liked her sound and she was really cute. The singer from Above the Golden State. Ken Block of Sister Hazel. Jonny Dias. Ray Stevens.
No huge names… I never really run into famous people. I met Marty Stuart when I was a little kid, but I had no clue who he was. Me and my friend were riding the elevator in our hotel, and some guy got on and said “hey” and we said “hey” and then we get back to the hotel room and the country music awards were on, and we watched him step on stage. I still really don’t know who he is though. I dont’ really listen to country music. But Jenny Simmons is my fav of all I listed, by the way.
Chris snapped a pic of me with Adie Camp after (someone) introduced me to one of my favorite artists in the whole wide world
It was awkward, I was intimidated. I wish I looked better in the pic.
My favorite of Chris is with Mercy Me… Chris asked Bart to take a picture of him and the “guys in the band”… funny!
Lol…that’s what I was going to say, Shellie! I have one with Brody. I actually have a bunch of awkward pics with MM, Jars of Clay, David Crowder, and most awkward by far was with Toby Mac. He looked like he’d rather be getting a root canal than taking pics with people.
Alice Cooper.
A
I have a photo of me and OJ Simpson when I was like in 8th grade.
Living where I do I see famous people every once in awhile & I’m not gonna bother them for photos while their walking on the beach or shopping in the grocery store.
There are a few Christian Artists that have come to our church that I’ve passed on a photo op with mostly because I feel lame or didn’t think of it like … Evan Wickham, Phil Wickham, Chris Tomlin & Two or More.
But my that pictures are with Third Day, MercyMe & The Katinas. I had the most fun getting those.
Nice to see your hair
I have like 2 pictures with famous people and one of them is actually with Mercy Me. Yeah, awkward about describes me in those as well — hence why I just hate to have them taken or even asking for them. I hear ya Brody, I hear ya.
David Copperfield. Period.
These are from last night: http://twitpic.com/105ge0 and http://twitpic.com/105g76
Living in Australia, we don’t get many opportunities for “that photo”, so I just ask
I have a photo with Jars of Clay, Third Day (plus Brad!), Paul Colman Trio (I was their assistant for a day), and now Leeland and NewWorldSon. Almost got a pic with Family Force 5 last night too, but my phone went flat. I’m sure there are more photos that I can’t remember, but then again, maybe not!
Oh, I have a photo with the cast of Miss Saigon. Apparently they’re famous in the Philipines!
The only photo like this I have is with Decemberadio. I’ve met those guys on a couple of occasions.
I haven’t really had many other opportunities to ask for pictures, although I agree, most of the times, it is awkward.
Stephen Dorff (actor)
That’s the only one I have.
But I’ve missed a few opportunities as well. Mainly because I never think about asking. I’m going to try to ask more in the future. You know? Because even though it IS awkward, celebrity types are used to it. And once you have the photo, you’re always glad you did it, and the awkwardness is over!
Oh, forgot one! I also have a family pic with the REAL Kermit the Frog!
well, there was this one time I was passing through nashville and happened to have lunch with a crew of people that included Brody Harper.
but…I was too nervous to ask for a picture…
next time.
Haha. Mine is with your boys, MercyMe, a couple summers ago.
Not necessarily as much awkward pictures (awful pictures at places like Kingdom Bound where they usher you through the autograph line as quick as they can and continually yell “no posing for pictures”) as awkward encounters. Well, maybe the pic with Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary…Peter drew short straw and had to keep the crowd outside the dressing room distracted while Paul and Mary got to escape). I had never been one for M&G/backstage/autograph lines because I never had anything to say to the folks except “you’re cool.” In fact not much for autographs either. Would get into autograph lines more for the handshake than the autograph.
Though Twitter has changed that awkwardness. While I’ve had my awkward encounters w/ the likes of Third Day (joined Twitter a couple weeks after that encounter) and Matthew West (great guy but not hugely “involved” on twitter) I had some great conversations with Aaron Shust and Paul Baloche thx to our interactions on Twitter (to the point where I felt awkward because of the line behind me that I was holding up
. Hoping to do the same with Brenton Brown in May and Decemberadio and MercyMe @ Kingdom Bound (hope they do autograph table!).
Interesting that you’d still feel awkward taking a picture with someone even after you’ve spent effectively two days working with them….regardless of their “stature” in the industry.
Billy Currington (on 3 different occasions), Steve Holy, Sarah Buxton, Danielle Peck, Carolina Rain. These were all at arranged meet & greets.
Approaching performers at restaurants, etc. is something I would be uncomfortable with. It would be one thing to run into them at the airport or other location and say hello but to interrupt them when they are with others seems like an intrusion. I feel like we need to respect their private time.
1) Brody Harper(Clewiston Fl.)
2) Jars of Clay(West Palm Florida)
3) Chris Tomlin (who looks like a midget next to me West Palm Beach, Fl.)
4) Corey what’s his name from SlipKnot(Manchester N.H.)
5) This guy named Shaun Groves(Couple Places in Florida)
6) Switchfoot (who make me look huge West Palm Beach FL)
7) B.B. King (I prize this one, Manchester N.H.)
8) Rodney King (Lake Tahoe)
9) George H.W. Bush (Kennebunkport, Maine)
10) Family Force 5 guys (who wouldn’t play “country gentlemen” when Scott Stapp was in the audience)
11) A bunch of other Christian bands and artists.
I have two that stand out to me:
1. Michael Jordan- I was about 11. Total freak thing that we got to meet him, as it was an invite-black tie-only thing. My dad had just gotten off of work and I had been at soccer camp, so we were both pretty dirty. But, my dad knew the security guard at the door (it was at a car dealership in NC) and he let us in. I remember him patting me on the head and his fingers almost hit my chin. Crazy.
2. Shane & Shane – seen them many times and never met them…finally sucked up the “I don’t want to look like a stalker since I’m a dude” and met them, along with asking for the photo.
This is an interesting subject in my world because I LOVE music….I LOVE concerts…and I LOOOVE meeting the musicians at each concert. In fact, I can’t go to a show with my parents w/o them making some comment about how I’m going to find a way before the end of the night to get a photo w/ the artist :p
Funny thing is, 9 times out of 10, I have found a way to get said pic :p I admit, I sometimes feel awkward asking a total stranger (no matter how famous) to take a pic w/ me. Why would they want to do that you know? But I still do it. I’m not really big on autographs, but I LOOOVE getting photos to document the awesome shows I’ve been to, and the awesome artists I know. I even have multiple photos w/ artists (some so much that THEY ask ME if I want a photo instead of me asking them if I can get one :p)
That said, here’s a short list of all the musicians I’ve been found in photos with….
Rascal Flatts
Jeremy Camp
Brian McComas
Seventh Day Slumber
Third Day
Radney Foster
Walt Wilkins
Brian Hoefeldt (Derailers)
