David Crowder’s Church Music Leak
So yesterday I stumbled on to this little gem on the internet. Yep, 85 megabytes of free David Crowder. And a record that doesn’t come out until next week no less. Kinda weird don’t you think? I mean, who would think that it was a good idea to put someone else’s record up without the permission of the band for all to “search” and find, and download for free?
Maybe it’s a publicity thing from David and the guys? Maybe they want people to find it. Maybe not.
To me it’s kind of sad that someone would “leak” an album like this and genuinely screw the artist out of a release. I mean, I’m all for giving stuff away when it’s possible, but I’m also all for artists getting compensated for their work. And great work it is. This record is really good and absolutely worth the $15 to get it.
What are thoughts. Cool leak or Jacked up?

Jacked Up!! I think peeps should pay for it….Bugs me when people feel that they have a right to other people’s property or service. Being in the service industry I see it all the time and it is one of those things that gets under my skin. Jacked Up….
I’m sure you saw my tweet about how I’ve been listening to it today.
Yes, I got the leak.
I’ve also bought the 3 tracks they’ve released so far and I have this album on pre-order.
I know some people will still argue that me downloading even though I have pre-ordered is still wrong, but whatever. Crowder will receive my money.
This leak is only 160kbps per song. So to me this is preview quality anyway.

it’s lame. especially for a band like this one who works so hard to create something and then also create an anticipation around it…releasing a song each week, the great pre-orders, the videos…it’s all part of their creation of the album, so for someone to just take it and pawn it off online…just lame and selfish.
the other thing that is disappointing to me is that this is a Christian band…whose album is titled Church Music…where 99.9% of buyers will be self-proclaimed Christians.
without getting into the whole ‘is downloading ok or not’ debate, the bottom line is, the album belongs to the Crowder band (at least right now). it isn’t out, with copies ‘belonging’ to us yet. so to take it and post it…just not up and up.
to me this isn’t typical file-sharing, which people love to debate about. that’s a whole other discussion.
instead, it’s like walking into a store, shoplifting a bunch of merchandise, then going and selling it or giving it away with the excuse that, “well, i’m GOING to buy it next week…maybe…but probably not.”
i’m excited to get the album next week.
for now, i’ll go listen to How He Loves on their myspace.
Aside from the buzz that it may create, it’s essentially jacked up. I have some pretty strong opinions on this stuff. I understand how much goes into making even a shoddy record, so I can only imagine the magnitude of work the guys put into this one. Being an artist in the digital music age is definitely a game changer when it comes to how you approach actually having a livelihood from it.
You can guess my response. Jacked up. I will get my copy the old-fashioned way. My daughter AFTER the release party Monday night. In the mail. Making me wait a little longer. I’ve listened to about half on NRT’s site. Streaming on my phone. Not a great way to listen! Can hardly wait! Wish I still had a record player. I would so get the vinyl.
It’s jacked up. i’ll be honest, I used to have downloads going on Napster 24/7 back in the day. I started early, before there was even a mention about the legality of downloading music in the media. Even after it became shunned upon and people started getting sued, I was still going strong downloading music. Then, one day i finally realized it was a moral issue as much as it was a legal one. I looked at every song I had and only kept the ones I decided were worth buying albums for and then i began buying them. I will definitely be buying the album next week, and as much as i’d love to go get the leak, I can’t tell myself it’s ok simply because i’ll be paying for it anyway… just seems like downloading it early would be showing support for the actions of whoever leaked it.
If the artist did this on purpose, which it sure seems they didn’t, then it’s cool. Otherwise totally jacked. I don’t have any problem with someone downloading it that’s prepaid for it as long as they don’t share it with others themselves.
It’s stealing. There is really no other way to put it.
You are taking something from someone without paying for it and without their consent.
Not cool.
Jacked!
I don’t see what the issue is. I clicked on the “download” button above and all I got was a JPG. I did find the file referred to and downloaded it and listened. After clearing off the 7 viruses I noticed there was a lot more guitar shredding on this than other versions I have heard. I think I even heard some kazoo. I’m guessing Jack put it up to try to generate buzz for his “alternate” version. Is that what you meant by “Jacked up?”
Seriously though, no surprise that it’s available. I got a copy on Monday (courtesy of winning a contest) so there are physical copies out there. And yeah, even Christians put on the eye patch and hoist the Jolly Roger. I’d be surprised though if a majority of them would buy a CD if you took away their “free source.” Not rationalizing their behavior just kind of countering those who tout the money “lost” by artists to piracy.
But just to clarify: Jacked.
exodus 20:15 you shall not steal
deuteronomy 5:19 Neither shall you steal.
God’s Word is true.
You know what, someone somewhere connected to the band, their label or management is responsible for this? Maybe a competition winner?
I had someone here in UK tell me they had a copy last week & its not out here until the end of Oct (which is pretty pathetic considering the amount of UK fans who only know the release date as promoted in the USA).
I am not at all bothered that they have the album and i do not BUT someone “connected” to the band whether directly or indirectly is responsible. Doesn’t make it right but this will happen no matter what
Even if they had pre-ordered it from the band site they still couldn’t have had it that quickly from USA. They said they “couldn’t tell me” how they got it
