Full Court?
About six years ago I had a group of guys that would get together every week or so and play basketball. We’d sometimes to a full court thing, sometimes half depending on the number of guys that showed up. It was never really an organized thing, but it was really fun when a bunch of guys showed up and we could make it a real game. We’d play for a few hours and then all hang out or grab dinner or something after. Like I said. That was about six years ago.
Well last night I got a text from my buddy Josh letting me know that a group of guys were getting together to play. I’ve been wanting to start playing again ever since we have moved here but haven’t found out where people were playing. So last night I decided to give it a shot.
Now it’s been literally about four years since I have even tried to play an organized game of basketball and I get there only to find out that this is full-court, five on five, real deal basketball. With guys that are used to doing this every week. And me without my oxygen tank. Two straight hours, five games, more running than I have done in years, more jumping than I have done in years, more running into sweaty men than I have done in years, and today I can barely walk.
I had a great time though and can’t wait till next week. I just hope I get the feeling back in the bottoms of my feet by then. Turns out taking six years off of doing something like that can really make it hard to get back into it.
What’s something you used to love to do, but haven’t done in years? What’s stopped you from doing it?

There’s a game called ‘wallyball’ that I learned in high school and taught to dozens of my friends in college. It’s basically volleyball in a racquetball court. So much fun and oh so dangerous.
The tough thing is that you need a racquetball court fitted with the holds in the walls to screw in the net. I haven’t had access to that in quite a while. There’s gotta be somewhere in NYC with a wallyball-ready racquetball court…

i love swimming (like…lap swimming) but hanford is…not as progressive as it should be. so, the only pools in town aren’t available for swimming.
makes sense right?
so yeah. no more swimming.
Soccer. I played indoor soccer for several years then I had kids. I love soccer and my 19 yr. old son played through his freshman year of high school. He decided to play football the rest of his high school days and went to college on a football scholarship. He quit after the first season and now plays soccer for fun. If I were still young and in shape I would give him a good soccer workout every day!
I will have to think about it after i stop laughing at the visual of you running around sweaty with your oxygen tank.
I needed the laugh after crying thru loswhits prayer request.
You guys are awesome and love reading your post, blogs etc.
Volleyball. I adore it. Love it. Wish so much I could play. I’ve had both ACL’s replaced in my knees and already have arthritis in each joint due to all the trauma they’ve endured (I’m 34!). In all transparency, my weight doesn’t help. My recent commitment to health (daily exercise, sensible, healthy eating) will hopefully allow me to play again, even with my DonJoy knee braces! +
Guitar. I messed my hands up pretty bad after a car accident & haven’t touched mine in I’d say about 5 years.
I miss playing basketball. It was a great work out and fun all at the same time. Maybe I should move out to Tennessee so we can play together.
Well, I swam competitavely from the ages of 3-18, with a small break freshman year. I basically stopped because I graduated high school and am too slow to keep compeating. i miss it though, greatly.
The thing i miss the most, however, is music recording and editing. I started studying at age 14 until 2005 (age 22). I went to sound school, got internships,a nd then was going to college. However, I started going deaf which caused me to take a break. Then just before ear surgery I fell in a hole on a mission trip in Mexico and shattered my legs where I was in bed rest for a long while. After I healed from my legs (about 4 months later) I had ear surgery. i had to leave school because of the circumstances and soon after started working at disney and have been here ever since. That’s the thing I miss the most. I am now trying to get back into it though, slowly but surely. We’ll see what God wants to do with me, hehe.
Tennis.
I played into my college years and LOVED it. My family would go to the beach on vacation and I’d stay at the condo tennis courts and play for HOURS all by myself – without even a wall to hit against. I’d just carry a huge bag of tennis balls and practice different shots – walk to the other side of the court and start over.
I haven’t played much since my children were born. I just don’t have that kind of free time.
So now I run. I like it well enough, but I do miss the competition of a regular sport…
Have fun playing basketball!
that was a lot of fun! took me about 6 weeks before I didn’t feel like dying after we played. looking forward to it again this week. you are a force.
