Morimoto NYC

morimotos_nyc

Remember that twenty-three hour drive I was on yesterday?  Well, about eighty miles outside of New York, Billy decided that we should all take a little detour and go to dinner in the city since we were so close and ahead of schedule.  Fair enough.  He’s the boss right?

Well, he decided on a place called Morimoto and I knew I had heard the name before but couldn’t place it until I looked it up online.  The Iron Chef.  Now I remember.  As we pulled into the city all the guys who had been on a bus a day and a half started wondering what you wear to something that says on the website the attire is “Casual Chic”.  Turns out they knew we were a band so I think they were a little more lenient on the dress code thing.

Well, since this could possibly be the only time in my life I would eat at an Iron Chef’s restaurant, I had no intention of getting a cheeseburger or something like that, and I wanted to try something appropriate with the environment.  Meaning, I wanted something weird, or something that was specific to that place.  That first picture up there was my dinner.  Some spicy tuna rolls, some other salmon looking things, some shrimp, some more tuna things, a clam and some cake type stuff that was actually made with shrimp.  I’m sure it all has really fancy names, but I don’t remember any of them and probably wasn’t paying attention when the waitress told me.

That picture in the bottom left is oysters that Billy talked me into trying.  While I’m glad I gave it a shot, I can’t say that I was a huge fan.  The bottom right is a little hard to see, but it’s sort of an appetizer thing.  The big square in the back is actually a tray of salmon paste type stuff that you scrape out and dip in the various things up front.  You know wasabi, avocado, and some other things.  That black dot is some caviar. Pretty good but a very different texture.  There was a ton of other stuff all over the table but I felt weird running around taking pictures.

All in all we had a great time.  It was fun to experience something like that.  And a massive thanks to Billy for picking up the tab.  When you walk into a place and they offer you three different types of water it’s typically a little over my price range.

Today we are in Maine, and I heard there’s lobster for every meal in catering, but haven’t been in to check it out.  I guess this is the trip of awesome food.  So here’s a question.  What’s the fanciest place you have ever been to eat?  City?  Name of restaurant?  Anything.  I just experienced mine last night.

Ready?  Go.

  1. I cannot remember the name of it. In Nashville. You and Kristin took us there at Christmas. I just remember it was amazing. I also remember that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban ate across the aisle and I know I did not embarrass you !!!!!

    Love you, Mom

  2. fanciest is probably the Napa Rose in anaheim.

most exotic, and perhaps by extension fanciest is Bloody Mary’s in bora bora. like in the play South Pacific. THAT Bloody Mary’s. we were on our honeymoon. the beef was nasty.

  3. Chop House in Pasadena. I think our bill ended up being over $400 & someone graciously treated us to dinner that night. The best wine Black Chicken (Red Zin) Biale

There is also a little place in Downtown Riverside that Steven took me for my 21st bday where we had goose liver and lots of other eclectic type entrees. It was so yummy!

    Yay for good food!

Kudos to you for at least trying all that stuff and we LOVE checkin out the pics. We have the cookbook of his and Alan is a big fan but we cannot get MANY of the crazy ingredients to prepare the food. I once almost choked on the cracker that an oyster was on just so I wouldn’t have to chew the oyster :-) . First and last time of trying oysters.

Hmmmmm well since you asked I think the fanciest place we have eaten was back in 2006 @ a restaurant called Mary Elaine’s in Scottsdale AZ it is French Cuisine @ a resort with an Awesome looking Hotel called The Phoniecian (sp?). We were out there for the Barrett Jackson Auto auction (that is another story) and Alan did well on a car he sold there.

I had White truffel Risotto which was Off the Hook Awesome at a price tag of $100. For that entree. I will never forget the experience. I’m sure Alan had Escargot (again sp?) and Fois Gras but I am an animal lover so I can’t do the Fois Gras thing. He ALWAYS has that if it is on the menu anywhere we go.

We had many half bottles of very nice wine that Alan can tell you the vintages and names I can just tell you they were good but don’t remember the names or vintages, just the experience.

All in all our dinner was $1800. For two people but an experience we will never forget.

Auberge du Soliel in the Napa Valley on our honeymoon. My in-laws made the reservation for us and picked up the tab (over $200 for the 2 of us almost 12 years ago!!!). Appetizer was call the Seven Deadly Sins (really good). Amazing food, dessert and a glass of wine I actually enjoyed. That was definitely the swankiest place I’ve eaten – I felt completely out of place!

PS We have a permanent pleasant reminder named Trace Patrick Baltazar who will be 3 in October ;-D

  7. I think the fanciest restaurant I have been to was with my aunt and uncle in Monterey CA. I remember there being a butler type lady in the bathrooms. By the way, what is the female version of a butler? (mr. vocab scholar)

  8. Butless duh. Everyone knows that. You know a restaurant is fancy if it’s got a butless.

I can’t remember the “fanciest” place I’ve ever eaten. Not into fancy when it comes to food. The photos above would’ve made me opt for another 23 hour ride in hopes of a Chick-Fil-A or a Cracker Barrel.

  10. I guess Christopher needs to translate this post into Japanese! Ha, ha, ha!

Not a big fan of sushi, but the pics are so bright & colorful. Thanks for being a “nerd” & running around the table. I’m sure it’s not the 1st time that has been done there. What a great adventure!

There’s a place where we have our time share in Palm Desert that we eat ate every time we go. It’s on the JW Marriott property. It’s Italian. They even serve the little scoop of sorbet between courses. In this little silver bowl with a hummingbird on it. They have the water guy, the wine guy, the waiter guy (or girl), but no butless! What a made up word, Brody! Duh!

    :)

  11. Some restaurant in Las Vegas – don’t remember the name… But I HAVE had lobster in Maine, which was wonderful, and I can’t WAIT to have some good sushi when I’m no longer pregnant! Looks delicious.

I agree with Beth, I’m not into fancy when it comes to food and I’ve never ate at a fancy restaurant. I think I would feel really out of place at a fancy restaurant besides I am a very picky eater and I do not like a lot of things. For example, I would not have eaten anything in those pics because I do not like seafood. It looks pretty but I just do not like it. I’ll stick to the southern home cooking. :)

We ate at Nola, Emeril’s restaurant in New Orleans. It was a casual atmosphere. The food was awesome!

  14. Fanciest restaurant-I couldn’t give you a name but I can tell you it would be one my grandparents took me to in my teen years somewhere in southern california. They were good at taking us to places my dad would scoff at because teens shouldn’t be eating at places that expensive.

As far as Morimoto’s goes-you just had a meal at one of the many restaurants I would love to visit. My 8 year old even loves sushi. He once told us “I want to try sushi” and we told him “not until you try several other new things. He accomplished that task so sushi it was, and sushi he loved. Now to take him again, which is a challenge living 120 miles in the middle of nowhere in the desert. =)
