It Only Takes One
Broadcasting things live is a tricky thing. There’s always this element of the ‘unknown’ and I think that’s what freaks some people out. I think that’s what causes people to shy away from it and decide to not do it. There’s also this element of making yourself subject to the public in real time. Where all you can do is react to people and what the decide to do. I think this freaks people out too.
I don’t know how many of you showed up to Jonny Diaz’s Live Chat last night, but if you did you noticed the “one chatter”. You know the one. The fifteen year old hiding in his mom’s basement typing the most offensive things he his middle school brain can think of to try to get a reaction from the rest of the chatters. Now, most of you know, this stuff happens. If you’ve ever been on any sort of live chatting thing, there’s always some scholar that throws out obscenities to try to get a reaction and it’s pretty easy to ban them from the chat. However, last night was a little different.
Due to some technical issues beyond my control and the flippant attitude for customer service expressed by Ustream I was somehow blocked out from being able to ban Mr. Offensive Chatter. What should have taken two clicks of a mouse turned into three phone calls and creating a whole new account to simply log in and block him. The problem? It’s a game now and he’s trying to be more offensive.
So, ten minutes and several comments later, I was finally able to ban him from the chat with no help from Ustream or even an, “I’m sorry this happened.” Not scoring points for Ustream.
So, bottom line. If you were offended, annoyed, distracted, or whatever else last night during the chat I apologize. Some time this stuff happens and we’ve got to just roll with it. Next I’ll be writing an email to the co-founder of Ustream to ask him if he thinks I should switch back to Mogulus for our live broadcasts.
+ (While a frustrated post, I am still being positive… except for my attitude toward Ustream)

Man, sorry to hear about this immature IDIOT who caused you trouble. I wanted to jump on last night, but getting packed for a few days at youth camp changed plans. What troubles me more is when customer service is not stellar. I have never understood why businesses screw up customer service. If you ask me, that’s the easiest part of running a business. If you delight customers and focus on communication and then deliver on what you said you will do, well, you will have more customers.
Wow, what a business model… Successful businesses focus on serving their customer – every time. They also do not tolerate employees who don’t share and execute that same vision.
Blessings today! + (on the blessings) – (on lousy customer service!)
But overall, +
Love the “bad apple” pic. Perfect for the person who interrupted an otherwise great broadcast. But, you know what all of the 100+ peeps that were on actually ignored them! It was great!
I’m sorry uStream was a thorn in your side. I thought after last fall that you & the pres were like best buds! I knew something was up, because you zap those types in an instant. I could hear a phone conversation in the background & you sounded pretty patient from the tone I heard early on. You don’t have to apologize. It happens and you did your job, eventually, and even Jonny seemed to not get too wide eyed at the situation. Casually telling us to never mind them. No big deal. Really. You still rock & don’t let anyone tell you different.
Have a great weekend at home before you gear back up for road travels.

Is it sad that now I want to tune in to the next chat 10 times worse than I did before?
Sounds like good old fashioned reality media to me- Sign me up!
No, its kids like that that make you wish the U.S. had a public caning policy especially for these offenders.
Mogulus just got a whole lot more good looking.
I had to tell Bekah to leave the chat, cause I am a mom, and I just didn’t want her to see that stuff. I simply minimized my screen and opened another window. Worked on my blog while listening to Jonny talk and sing. It worked out fine for me. Thanks for introducing us to him. I look forward to hearing more of him on the MM tour.
I saw some, saw it disappear. I knew you were “on it”, but when he said those ugly things to you….. with your name…I wanted to jump through the screen and have him bite soap.
I know you will handle this well.
Love you…Mom
Unfortunately the reality is that the internet is still “life” with all of its ugliness. Now yes we sometimes have more control over this ugliness on the internet then we would have say, at a restaurant. I will say i was not there-but have had this happen in chats before. How many of you have had this happen before? Lets say everyone had gotten together for this nice little chat at a restaurant, and at the next table someone was using language everyone found offensive? Could we have banned him from interrupting our conversation with the offensive language? No-we could only have chosen to ignore it, but there would be no way for us to not hear it.
I ask-how many people stopped what they were doing and reacted to him rather then continued with the conversation they had come to take part in? In a restaurant would everyone get up and confront the person at the next table? Most likely not. Would you ask the restaurant to intervene-yes. Are they always going to be able to do something about it? No, but you would likely not blame the restaurant and never visit there again because of the actions of one customer on one occasion.
What we can learn is that we will not always be able to control everything in our surroundings, internet or not, and that we must learn to control how we react, or don’t react, to what is happening. As believers we are responsible for our actions and even how we respond to the actions of others-and that requires us to respond in love even when they do not show love. It requires us to show forgiveness even when they do not deserve forgiveness. Something I struggle with and work on everyday.
It was still fun. The tour of the house & fridge was a good distraction.
i can never get the ustream chats to work…they need low security settings to run, but my work laptop won’t let me lower the security settings…so there u have it. feel free to switch back to what you were using last fall.
you will find NO complaints here. lol.
have a great week!
I was unable to make it to the chat. I’ve been chaperoning our youth group to Mission-Fuge all week. Sorry to hear about the bad experience though. Lookin forward to our next online adventure.
