Cinco de Dominated The French

mariachi

Well, here it is.  The one day a year we can grab some tacos, pile on the guacamole and break out Mariachi Band for XBox.  Nothing says ‘celebration’ like rocking the plastic giant nylon string guitar and the fake trumpets.  If I can only remember where I put my tassel jacket.

Little known fact, by the way. The 5th of May is not actually Mexican Independence Day. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico. The real deal is that 4,000 Mexican soldiers dominated the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. That’s what this party is all about. Maybe it’s not a little known fact… everyone could know that I suppose, but I don’t want to hear about anyone eating any French Toast, or French Fries today okay?

Tonight Kristin and I don’t have many plans for Cinco de Mayo, but there will be some Mexican food eaten… and I think Blue and I might watch the third X-Men. I found out yesterday that I have bronchitis, so that’s pretty fun. It seems like once a year I end up in this situation because I get a lame cold and then don’t take the time to get better. Oh well. At least the antibiotics were free at Publix.

So what’s your Cinco de Mayo look like?

*Disclaimer: I am not a historian, nor do I care to be, and I know there are two sides to every story. So if you are French and I have offended you, please allow me to buy you a Corona.

  1. Actually tacos sound like a good idea for dinner. Was trying to decide what to make. Thanks for the inspiration! Or maybe French Toast. Or maybe tacos made in French Toast. (j/k)

Take the whole prescription of antibiotics. No slacking. Even at the “race”. I will remind you every day. Your personal pharmacist as close as twitter! Ha! Really, though, rest & feel better. You’ve felt cruddy for too long. :)

I knew the reason for celebrating Cinco de Mayo, but then I’ve been to Maximilian’s Castle in Mexico City. We also have large contingents of Mexicans in Kansas who celebrate Mexican Independence Day in September. (BIG week-long party in Topeka with the crowning of a King and Queen.)

Got a coupon for Furr’s for Cinco de Mayo celebration. The whole family(4 of us) can eat for about $20. That’s my plan!

  3. No Cinco de Mayo celebration here. We have an appointment with the tax man this afternoon. Then we’ll be attending our daughter’s May Day program @ school which happens to be a very big deal here.

  4. I’m actually Mexican and I have no plans.

I don’t know why anyone really celebrated cinco de Mayo, ‘cuz the very next day the French came back & kicked out butt, lol!

  5. Barb

Mexican food for us today. That’s how we celebrate. That’s good for us.

  6. I just wanted to check the comments on this one to see if you had to buy any Frenchies a Corona. Tee hee.

Went to Brody’s and Kristins Fav Mexican food place with Barb Erin and Zion Brody today, olay!
The guy that owns the place when asked said this about cinco de mayo.
” It was a minor victory at Puebla Mexico, basically the French screwed up, ran out of ammo and the Mexicans over ran them. The French later on regrouped, Kicked the Mexicans butts and took control of Mexico City for a time.”

Not a great story no wonder true Mexicans don’t celebrate.
PS He said it’s great for business.

    I dido Brody’s historian disclaimer.

Actually, I did not what it meant but only because my granddaughter studied it last year.

I love Mexican food but we made hot dogs tonight but there was chili, does that count? LOL

  9. My friend’s birthday is today as well. So we at lunch at a Mexican restaurant called Tequila’s. It was the #10 lunch special. Three things on it (burrito, chalupa, and something else). They were all the same. Much like any other mexican restaurant.

  10. I made Italian. Is that ok?

  11. I had Mexican for lunch and Indian/Italian for dinner. and way too many chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

  12. i had frankenberry cereal and a lime margarita..i don’t recommend putting those two together as a meal. ever.

are you sure your ‘bronchitis’ isn’t the pig flu?
    jk. kinda.

  13. The interesting thing to note here-only in America do we make such a large celebration out of this day! The reason-we recognize it-whereas we do not recognize Sept 15th since it is not a holiday here. We never will and we never should. We accept the celebration of Cinco de Mayo because we can embrace it as a “cultural celebration” without interferring with our own independence whereas if we celebrated the independence day of any other country we would begin to do that. No other country celbrates July 4th =)
