Pure Awesomeness

pure-awesomeness

So, as most of you know it’s been getting pretty crazy around these parts, and I have been trying my hardest to stay organized.  In fact, as it stands right now, SkörInc has nine, yes, nine pending projects.  That’s a lot for Randy to do, and a lot for me to write down.  Well tonight I decided to step up my organization a little more and it comes with a funny story.

I went to Home Depot because William told me that I would be able to get a massive piece of white board for cheap.  William was right.  This bad-boy only cost me thirteen bucks.  Not bad eh?  With the clips to hold it on, I was out the door for just under twenty-three dollars.  Thanks to my smart friend William.  Here’s the funny thing.  As most of you know, or have heard, Tennessee is cold right now.  Like, really cold.  Like in the teens cold.  Well, I brought this thing to my car and quickly realized there was no way this was going to fit inside my car.  See, we have a little car and this thing is four feet by eight feet of pure awesomeness.  Pure awesomeness that will now need to be tied to the top of my car.

I ran back inside Home Depot to ask for some twine and came back out and starting tying it down.  Now, I’m no boy scout or anything like that so by the time I was done I had about fifteen knots wrapped around every handle on my car holding this thing down to the roof…. and it was still loose.  There was only one option and it was to hold my hand out the window while I drove home making sure this thing didn’t fly off the top of my car.  As if I could hold it if it decided to.

Well, remember when I said it was cold?  Well it’s eighteen degrees right now, and it never got above twenty-two today, so it wasn’t much warmer driving home.  By the time I got home I literally couldn’t feel my hand and it was bright red and purple.  I couldn’t even open the door with that hand when I got home.  Kristin saw my hand and told me to stick it under some warm water, then for some reason I almost threw up.  Not sure if it’s related, but my hand, even now, four hours later, still aches.  But I have my sweet white board.  Tomorrow… I write on it.

I’m in west Tennessee and its cold here too. Its a wonder that you didn’t get frost bite. How far was the drive from Home Depot to home?

I’m with Shellie, I was expecting a picture of your hand.

Can we all say..hypothermia!!! Glad you got home ok. Wow the wind chill outside your car must have been way below zero. You’re a better, or tougher, man than I. I don’t think I could have held my hand outside the car that long. Good job.

  5. Oh, man. I haven’t laughed that hard reading a blog in a loooong time. Stinking hilarious.

  6. No we do not say hypothermia…we say frostbite.

My sister called me from Bishop, Ca. I’m having so much fun. There is snow! It’s cold! It’s pretty! Great I tell her, I’m so happy for you. As I’m laying on my lounge chair in 80 degree So Cal weather.

A couple of weeks later she calls me. You know how I was complaining my toes were hurting? I went to the Dr. (which she NEVER does) and had him look at them. Frostbite! He says I have frostbite on my toes. From wearing TENNIS SHOES in the snow!!!

This from a woman who grew up in the mountains. We spent our winters layering and preparing against said damage.

Based on what my sister described you should be in a lot more pain in a day or two. Now you have to drive around with your other hand out or the opposite foot hanging out the window so you are evenly damaged. I’m type A like that.

  7. I love the “beverage” bottles on the wall haha

  8. For some reason, I am totally jealous and want a giant white board of my own. I have no need for a white board and it would go unused, but that doesn’t mean anything. Sadly I have no place to put one. You should by one for “the boys.” That way I can live my life through them.

Funny… However, a certain friend of yours (hint, hint) has a handy little pick-up truck for certain things like that.

Funny story. For a minute there I though you were going to tie yourself out of the car.

  10. A couple things…. I don’t have a picture of my hand, but even this morning it’s aching really bad….I was more focussed on not getting it cut off.

And Joe… I did tie myself out of the car once, but I just decided to leave that part out of the story… clearly you know my lack of ‘handy skills’.

  11. so funny….even more funny is that I did the EXACT same thing on thursday morning. Seriously…went to Lowes, got 2 whiteboards, tied them very poorly to the top of my Saturn Vue, and drove back to my office holding them with my left hand. I tied a scarf around my hand in hopes it would help…it did not

  12. One word… gloves.
Thick, lined, manly (of course) gloves. Which btw, I do believe they also sell at Home Depot. ;)
I know, I know. That’s very helpful AFTER the fact, right?!

    P.S.
Seriously though, I am praying your hand heals up fast Brody.

  13. Actually, on the re-read… it sounds a whole lot like frostbite. If your hands were actually blue or blue-ish then… you might be aching for a few days my friend. Just watch for cuts or sores and so forth. The throwing-up feeling probably came from shocking your system. If your fingers were blue and you couldn’t open the door, you froze the the sucker. And if you ran hot water on it… that must have hurt like a banshee. How long was the ride home?

  14. The drive home was only about 5 miles, but it felt like forever… especially when you can only go about 20 MPH…

  15. I’m so glad we don’t live in that kind of weather anymore, although it sometimes I’m freezing in the morning! Hope your hand gets to feeling better soon!

  16. At least your hand worked well enough to get it up on the wall. That is an awesome white board! I bet your kids love drawing on it.

Anything above 0 is something I can’t classify as cold right now. Currently it’s 24 degrees and snowing. Yesterday was the first day we got above 0 in over a week. Our “high” on Thursday was -12 and the low was around -35. Don’t get me started on the wind chill thing. Scott just loved working on the flight line this last week, nights too, let me tell ya. Just loads of fun. He’s ice fishing today because of the “heat wave” we’re currently experiencing.

I’m glad you and the white board made it home safely though. However, in the future, for cold hands like that, warm them slowly by rubbing gently or wrapping in a towel from the dryer. No water immediately as that’s rapid warming and can be dangerous.

  18. I’m late to read about you freezing your hand … how is it now?

The others that have said frostbite are right on. And Seth Ward is right, your hand is probably going to hurt/ache for days. I frostbit my feet back in Jr. High and they’re a problem in toe cold to this day. Hands too. I won’t go into details, but having Reynaud’s syndrome complicates things.

Run your hands under cool water next time, hot, or even warm is very painful. If your fingers swell and itch (as happens when mine warm up after a cold) I find that topical anti itch helps.

I was in Ohio all last week (Sun – Fri) and it was bitter cold, not sure it ever hit double digits. It was -10 on Friday when we went to the airport. Knowing it was going to be cold, I dressed warmly!!

  19. jerry seinfeld has a fantastic bit on this very situation.

    thanks for sharing.
