The Ham Festival

For the past two years I have been out of town for The Ham Festival and Kristin has taken the boys on her own.  It’s a little festival south of Nashville, with fair style food, bounce houses, petting zoos, a bunch of other little craft booth things, and several hundred people.  I think Kristin likes to go because it’s a small town thing and probably reminds her of Gilmore Girls, but we all had an awesome time today.  The boys got to pet some llamas and a tiny donkey, and we even got to ride a train pulled by a painted lawnmower.  Tonight there are supposed to fireworks but we decided to make it a day thing and be home in the evening.

Now I am watching the end of the Miami / Florida State game that I somehow got sucked in to.  I don’t know a thing about College Football but somehow this is a pretty cool game.

The Congregational BGV’s

I’ve been in church my whole life.  For the past three years I have traveled the country, finding myself in several different types of churches and along with that, been involved several different musical styles of worship.  But there’s still one thing that stands out to me every time it happens.

Now, I’m not sure if you are one of these people, and if you are I’m hoping that you can explain something to me.  If not, maybe you can see where I am coming from.  What I’m talking about is the congregational background singer.  You’ve hear of them?  Or maybe you’ve heard them?

I don’t know what goes on inside these people but they are the ones that are singing words that aren’t on the screen.  They aren’t what the worship leader is singing, but it sounds suspiciously like something you might hear a background vocal singer bust out on a Tomlin record.

Now this is beyond the occasional harmony.  This is the full on “singing other words that lead up to a chorus” or something like that.  Maybe singing the chorus while everyone else is singing the verse, or adding words to the end of a verse or something.  You know what I mean don’t you?  Now, I’m not saying that this person isn’t worshiping, and I’m not saying that everyone needs to sing the same exact thing and leave no room for God and all that.  I’m just simply asking is where does that come from?

Now I might offend someone with this, but I personally can’t help but feel like a lot of that is simply to draw attention to ones self rather than join in with the congregational singing.  Am I wrong?  It just seems like there’s no reason for the added lyrics or the over singing that goes on most of the time.

What do you think?   Do you know the folks?  Am I off here?

Nineteen Hours

Did you forget? You’ve got just under nineteen hours to purchase your un-raffle tickets from Brian and Amy.  Brian has a goal of selling ten more tickets before the un-raffle ends and I think we can make it happen.  Now for those of you just joining us here’s the deal:

UNTICKETS: You will receive 1 UNTICKET for every $25 you donate. There is no limit to how many UNTICKETS you can have in the drawing.

PRIZE: The prize for the UNRAFFLE is a 7 day/night resort stay at your choice of hundreds of locations. We have 2 of these prizes so that means two different people will walk away winners.

See now, Kristin and I plan on winning one of the trips and we are leaving our kids with Brian and Amy to get them ready for adopting more kids, but that will leave one other prize available to win so head over there and toss your un-raffle ticket into the weird Bingo spinning thing that looks like a huge hamster wheel.  I have no idea if that’s how they are picking a winner, but that’s the way I picture it.

Who’s got their tickets?

Positive Post Wednesday (?)

Well, I totally forgot yesterday, but welcome to Wednesday and welcome to the first ever, Positive Post Wednesday.

Most of you know that last week I had the chance to go down to Atlanta and hang out with the MercyMe guys for the day.  What I didn’t know going down there was that my friend Eric would be filling in for their merch guy for the trip and he would be with them.

Eric was one of the first guys I met when I moved to Nashville.  He was out with Third Day doing their merch for some shows that I went to and we ended up being hotel roommates.  From then on Eric and I have hung out occasionally (when we are in town at the same time) and were even in a band for a week together.

Here’s the cool thing about Eric.  If you read his blog for any amount of time you’ll quickly see that he’s a guy full of questions, full of doubt, and full of a willingness to learn something new.  He’s a cynic, he’s mouthy, and he’s one of the most genuine caring people I’ve met.  His concern and love for people goes beyond his cynicism, and his fight to live a life as Christ-centered as possible is obvious.

The more I get to know Eric, the more nothing surprises me about the lengths he will go to help other people and spread the gospel.  I know this next year is sure to be full of changes for him, and I’m glad to call him a friend.  If you haven’t, check out Eric’s blog and say hello.

Alright peeps, now it’s your turn.  I know it’s Wednesday.  I know it will throw some of you off, but let’s see what you’ve got.  Let’s make it huge.  And yes, you can use it if you wrote one yesterday.  Ready?  Go.
