I Was A Tech

So, before this tour started I knew that there was one day when MercyMe’s normal guitar tech would be off for a wedding and there was talk of me taking his place, though nothing was confirmed.  Until yesterday.  I found out at about ten in the morning that I would be his replacement and I’d have to somehow figure out what I was doing.

Now, I’ve played guitar for over ten years, and tuned plenty of guitars, and even was technically Phil’s guitar tech on the Crowder tour, but even that was only two guitars.  But last night was a little different.  Especially since I was the only one and there are two guitar players.  Not to mention I’ve never actually tuned a banjo.

I got a crash course lesson right after sound check which consisted of lots of pointing and me frantically writing on little strips of tape.  I was a little stressed all day about it, but once I got into the second or third song it was going pretty well.

In fact aside from walking directly into Bart after one of the changes I think it went great.  I am pretty glad that Wes is back, but it’s cool to know that it’s not that big of a deal if I need to do it again.  So that’s the question of the day.

What’s something you have done recently that was something you were nervous about doing but pulled off?  Too specific?  Okay.  What’s something you’ve accomplished recently that you feel pretty good about accomplishing?

Ready?  Go.

  1. Last Saturday Leslie Brooke and I went sailing with a customer in order to test autopilot and wind monitoring equipment. He let me steer his 40 foot sailboat, which also happens to be his house, for about 20 minutes in high winds with full sail. It held a steady “heal” of about 30 degrees, making it impossible to stand up without bracing yourself. That made me a little nervous, but I survived.

  2. I substituted for a high school Spanish teacher and had 3 minutes to look at lesson plans before I started. Pretty intimidating, but it turned out to be a really fun day.

I’m mentoring a fourth grader and have been feeling kinda iffy about the job I’ve been doing, but this week she told me, “I just want you to know you’re the best tutor I’ve had in my whole life.” :)

  4. Passing two midterms last week…but I do not know how I did on the third midterm yet.. but I feel good about it:) they were tuff tests..

  5. Sounds like a fun experience.

  6. So this weekend was my school play, and since it was the musical “The Wizard of Oz”, i tried out for the only non-singing part. And got it: Wicked Witch of the West.
Last night was our premier and in one scene, i stand on a rock and scream, then turn to my guard…
As i turn to yell at my guard, i notice that he didn’t come out on his cue…. I was stuck. For a few REALLY long, akward seconds before finall, just shrinking back down behind my rock.
After the play, lots of people asked me if I had forgotten one of my lines. So my buddy Charlie (the guard), left me hangin’ onstage. But I took the heat for it. Go me?

  7. Wow – thats a pretty cool opportunity. Can you teach me how to tune a banjo?!

  8. Brody's Dad

I don’t have an answer except to say that is awesome you got to do that. Love Dad

  9. I have that experience frequently in my job, actually! Maybe I just don’t have a very high level of self-confidence?

  10. I successfully carved a pumpkin and made it look adorable. I’ve never done it before (:
