Dave Or David

So, it’s been pretty crazy around these parts the last few days, but there was something that has been in my head all day and I need to get it out. I think I know too many David’s or Dave’s.  It seems like every time I am talking to someone or about someone their name is Dave, or David. It’s kind of driving me crazy.

Currently in my address book on my computer I have twelve people with the name Dave or David.  Ridiculous?  I think so.  So that’s my question for the day.  How many Dave’s or David’s do you know?

Okay, one more question.  Do I need the apostrophe on Dave’s or David’s?  Or is that grammatically incorrect?

Ready?  Go.

“Dave Or David”

  1. I don’t know about now, but I had three guys named David Wayne in my graduating class of 60.

  2. No apostrophe. Daves is the plural of Dave while Dave’s is the possessive (as in “That is Dave’s hat.”). Either way works for me because I don’t get too hung up on correctness in blog postings.

My late father would tell you that the sentence “How many Daves or Davids do you know?” is also not correct and should be “How many people named ‘Dave’ or ‘David’ do you know?”

    But I think that’s a bit much. :-)

  3. Funny story about Davids.

My dad’s name and my uncle’s name are both David. When I was younger my mom would tell me stories about going kite flying with “David,” or fishing with “David,” and for YEARS I thought it was so awesome that my mom and dad knew each other when they were in elementary school. Apparently I also didn’t think it was weird that they lived in the same house.

Hmmm…not too many. I can only think of one right now, actually.
My problem is with Ashleys and Nicoles!

  5. Actually none. I don’t have one friend/acquaintance that goes by the name Dave or David. Infact I have no friends with a repeat name. What’s wrong with me.

  6. My hubby and I know of a few. But the funny thing is, we never call them by name. It’s always, ‘so and so’s husband who does this…or ‘the encyclopedia guy who used to work at your business’ or ‘the dude who used to be our neighbor.’ It’s never Dave or David.

  7. Rowan

Currently 3. My accountant, a boy from church, and our mutual friend in California.

  8. i have 14 dave/david fellows in my address book.

    no apostrophe needed.

  9. Nope no apostrophe….but no one truly cares about these things. Fourth grade teachers just make us paranoid that we don’t add enough punctuation to things :)

I know too many Dans! I think i know 7 Dans. As for Davids, my brother is a David and I think I know about 7 of those too!

  10. I actually don’t know too many Daves or Davids… Right now I can’t even think of one David I have communication with… that’s kinda sad because it’s one of my favorite guy names.

  11. I’ve only got 4 in my address book.

BUT, it’s my grandpa’s name, my middle name, and a bunch of my college buddies’ middle names.

Now here’s what I find interesting. My current day job involves selling machine parts… so, I talk to a lot of mechanics and engineers. Overwhelmingly, the most popular name is Bob. How sterotypical is that?

  12. I actually don’t know any Daves or Davids.
I’ve known many in my lifetime, but none anymore.
But it is a very common name. Especially in American Idol this year. I think there was like 3 or 4 in the final 12 or something. Crazy.

Actually just kidding! There is this little kid named David who I coached during summer camp this year. He was one of my favorites.

The name that is really common among my friends is Sara(h). I know about 5 or 6. Maybe 7.

  13. Hannah

5-6 Davids I actually talk to. I went to college with a couple more that I haven’t talked to since I graduated.

Rachel or Rachael is another story I know at least 25.

  14. Dave

Well, Brody…. I just checked my address book and found 3 Brody’s. Or is is Brodies…

  15. I know too many Davids to count!
