Where Do You Hear?

We are still doing that “Live Like You Were Dying” study at our church and we are even doing a small group which Kristin and I have never done.  We’ve only done it once but there are some really cool people there and it’s nice to talk to new people.  The other day one of the questions in the study asked, “Where do you hear God most”.  I started thinking about that answer and I realized that, because I am so distracted most of the day, I think it’s when I am doing mundane, repetitious things.  Things like mowing the lawn, or pressure washing the deck, both of which I did today.  I don’t know why it is, but I think it’s because I can’t be doing other things.  I am doing something that I don’t really have to think about and I can just let my mind wander.  I don’t know if that’s what the question was asking, but that’s how I took it, and that’s my answer.  What about you guys?

Where do you hear God most?  And for those of you that don’t think you “hear from God” where do you hear things that you are refusing to admit is God talking?

“Where Do You Hear?”

I hear best when I am listening.

I’ve not attended church regularly (ie: oh, maybe 20+ years ??)

Three Sunday’s ago I went. Then went again this past Wednesday I went again, to bible study specifically. On my drive to meet my friend (and ride with their family), I asked God to open my eyes so that I see what He wanted me to see. I asked Him to open my heart, so that I could let in the message He wanted me to hear.

The message at bible study: Opening one’s life to God.

    I heard the message. :-)

  2. The car and I don’t just mean other drivers starting out there sentence with “God…”

  3. When I am supposed to be sleeping… Night time is always when I feel closest to God because it’s when I feel the farthest from other People. (Probably because they are all sleeping…)
Or when I am driving in my car, because it is always super quiet. (My parents took the radio away because I’m still a “new driver”)
Oh well… I’ve heard a few things from God that just might be worth giving up my tunes for a few months…

  4. Everywhere…

For my entire life, my dad and mom shared with us about how they “heard God” anywhere, everywhere and “talked to God” continually throughout each day of their lives. Telling my sister and I about 1 Thess 5:17 and what the apostle Paul meant about living in a constant heart ‘n’ attitude of prayer as we go about our day-to-day. Then, they would go on to say how when you stay in relationship with Jesus like that, you end up wanting to talk to Him like all the time. You can practically never get enough. You laugh with Him, you cry with Him, you whisper, you yell, you sing, you dance (just like King David), and on it goes. He’s your first love, your best friend, your daddy, your everything… and as such, you desire Him more and more. Therefore, you seek Him more and more. And in turn… you hear Him… more and more and more.

  5. Under the stars. No question, that’s when I’m closest to God.

  6. great question, Brody. I’d have to say while driving, by myself…

  7. Oh and lately in my dreams, in all seriousness, lately God has been talking to me more than I have heard in a long time. I am going through a really messed up situation and I pray and God continues to tell me the same thing, “trust me,” and it is the most difficult thing to hear right now.

  8. In all seriousness I haven’t “heard” God that many times in my life. Like, fully knowing that the voice of God has spoken to you.

I know my brain is constantly going all day and night. But…when I hop into a shower/bathroom area there is something about it that God’s voice just seems to boom! Pretty crazy, but also very interesting that the only part of my day I find relaxing is when I hear God.

brody, its the exact same way for me. when im driving, washing dishes, mopping…mindless things (well, driving shouldnt be mindless, oops) but its the few times where nothing else is pulling at me. i just, gel. and i guess…i hear. oh. and when im in the shower too. tmi?

  10. I hear God thru the words to a song. I’ll have the radio on, and a song will start playing, and the words just make me stop and say, “Thank you, Jesus!” or “Doh! Okay, God, I get it.”

God uses other people to speak to me. And books. And moments of quiet. And moments of loudness at an awesome concert. And in the reading of His Word.

I think God is constantly speaking to us. The question is, are we taking the time to listen to Him?

  11. getting lost under the water of a shower

  12. When I’m hurt and need Him. I guess I would say I “feel” God more than “hear” Him. Either way, it’s when I really know that He is there.

I checked out the website for the study. It sounds like a great study. However, it bugs me when they say that “We’re all terminal.” No, no we’re not. Being terminally ill isn’t a blessing. It’s actually sucks.

  13. Most of the time I have to physically go somewhere…like a place of solitude. I don’t know why. Most of the time, when I make an effort to get somewhere with God, He honors the effort. Even if I don’t “hear from Him,” which is hard to quantify as it is, I’m always happy I went. I can remind myself of His faithfulness, and He always seems to “feel closer” when I am by myself.
