God’s Pottery

I might be late to talk about this, but Kristin and I watched a previous episode of Last Comic Standing last night online and one of the comedian contestants on the show were these guys called God’s Pottery.  They are this over the top Christian singing duo that sings about wholesome things and wear shirts that say stuff like “Virginity Rocks”.  Honestly I thought they were pretty funny.  A little on the “Dumb And Dumber” side, but really funny about it.  And they even have a blog

Here’s what I am wondering.  Do Christians see this as (a.) a mockery of everything “Christian” by making Christians look like idiots, (b.) the first time Christians aren’t trying to copy the culture around them and going so far the other way it turns to comedy, or (c.) a legit ministry by creating something so absurd that they are embraced by a culture looking for something absurd?  I honestly go back and forth.  They crack me up but are also pretty annoying, and that’s not even throwing the whole “Christian” thing in to it.  Either way I think what they have created is something that makes you want to know more. And that’s the brilliant part.

I know there’s a wide range of belief’s represented here on this blog so I’m curious what you guys think?

  1. LOL… you are late. My hubby just posted about this last week. But there hasn’t been a lot about them, surprisingly.

I’ll say what I said on his blog:

I think that this one falls under the Philippians 1:15-18 clause.

“It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill…. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.”

There’s nothing in their message that is against the gospel of God. If anything, it brings up the issues.

    Are they cheesy? Yes.

Are they harmful and offensive? I don’t think so.

  2. I have no idea of how anyone could call these people Christians. They are CLEARLY mocking and making fun of Christians. I can understand a little satire, and I think it is funny when people make fun of stereotypical Christian things, but this is clearly for the shock value and ripping on believers. Sorry to be such a blatant person about this, but it IS speaking against the message of God. Christianity is not a joke, it is living a life like Christ, and I am pretty sure that Jesus wouldnt tote around a rainbow strapped guitar singing a song about a brand new life in Christ!

sorry, i hope this isnt mean, and that wasnt my intentions, but it is clearly a couple of guys that hate Christianity because they have been burned by, or have seen a bad side of Christianity. if you want to see an unamerican view of Christianity, look at our brothers in China or Sri Lanka or places that can’t preach Christ. I am sure they arent worried about what kind of coffee is being served in their sanctuary, or how many guitars are being played during worship. They are consumed with getting the saving message of Jesus out, and not this social gospel being taught today.

So Brody, again I am not trying to be mean, but honestly I believe this is a blatant attack on the church, and makes Christians look stupid. In the end scheme, I am sure satan has scored a few points with this one.

    matt

  3. They were kinda funny, in a dumb and dumber way like you said. I’d be interested in seeing more but I’m not sure how good or bad I feel about it.

  4. I love these guys, but I think they are making a mockering of Christians. I’m cool with it though.

  5. I would have to agree that they are making a mockery of Christians, but don’t we kind of deserve it. A lot of Christians act like this. But I don’t think this means they aren’t Christians. Maybe they just realized how stupid Christians look sometimes and decided to embrace that and be put on national television in front of millions of people talking about things like abstinence. (Christian or no, are they not still doing that?)

p.s funny, but not that funny.

  6. how can they be Christians? What about their “act” would make ANYONE believe that they are Christians? Are there any fruits of the Spirit?

there is a good aspect of satire, but when does Satire become blasphemy? answer that one!

  7. I can’t figure them out honestly. I definitely think that they are making fun of Christians.

I couldn’t figure out why they continued the “act” when they were back at the house, where everyone else tones down the humor, and is acting normal eating their dinner or whatever. These guys are constantly “on” it seems. So that really weirded me out.

They were funny though, to some degree.

If you check the wiki on them it says they are a “faux” Christian group and list the real names of the two comedians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God%27s_Pottery.
    Does that change anyone’s opinion?

  9. nope..just reinforces it. hah!

I saw this too and thought initially it might be funny…but really I didn’t even think it was that funny of an act. Not even being insulted with the content, I just didn’t think it was funny.

I will say that the Christian world is way more forgiving than say the Islamic world. We Christians are much easier to poke fun at since we won’t cut off their heads.
