That Time Of Year

Well it’s that time of year where everyone is cleaning out their garages.  Every street in our suburb area is lined with Garage Sale signs and on Saturdays like today there are blocks and blocks of people’s leftovers that will soon become something awesome for someone else.

I’ve never been a huge garage sale person.  I’ve been to a few but never made the rounds on an early Saturday morning.  Because of that, I’ve never actually found anything cool at a garage sale.  You know, those stories of picking up a painting at a house down the street for a dollar, only to find out that it’s some rare Rembrant sketch or something?  Or buying a wallet out of twenty-five cent box, to get home and find five hundred dollars hidden in a small flap.  I know this stuff happens at times, but it’s never happened to me.

Are you a garage sale person?  What’s the coolest, best or most valuable thing you have ever found at a garage sale?

I’ve never found anything valuable, but I used to love to go on Saturday mornings when I was a kid. My mom is a teacher and you know they don’t have big budgests, so she’d always be looking to buy kids books (she now gets compliments on her huge 1000s of books library from the parents!) I would always be looking to buy the old classic literary novels for like a quarter or something. It’s still the cheapest way to get books.

  2. I tend to go to garage sales to look for deals. One time I went to one and bought a Gas powered garden tiller for $30. I then took it home and a buddy and I cleaned out the carb, then sold it on ebay for $150. I am all about finding stuff for cheap that I can sell for more. In the end we both win, because you are getting rid of your crap, and we are both getting money!

  3. I like going to garage sales, but I don’t usually find too much. I got a practically brand new softball mitt at one last year for $20 though, so that was pretty cool. Usually, they cost around $60 or more.

  4. I don’t go often, but tend to go when the nicest neighborhood in our town has one.

Last year I found American Girl books (around $40 a set) for $10 for 8 sets!

I sold them on ebay and made a $290 profit!!!

  5. I LOVE garage sales! Recently got a whole new set of plates that I absolutely love. And a brand new Thomas the Train sleeping bag for my son. And some cute shoes for my daughter.

  6. I used to accompany my parents to garage sells…paintings were great!

  7. a beautiful, practically brand new Bernhardt sectional sofa.

Best find so far has been a vintage slide projector! Works perfectly for showing my husband’s grandfather’s old slides and it only cost me $5!
