Death Cab For Cutie Talk

I didn’t get a chance to talk about Death Cab’s new record much because we were traveling, but I did want to point out a few things.  The album is good, but not their best.  I will say this; it takes me a few listens for their albums to grow on me and I have only listened through the whole thing four or five times.  With that being said, here’s my top songs on the new record in the order that I think they deserve.

1. Cath… -
Ben Gibbard is a brilliant writer but this is the best verse on the entire record in my opinion:
Cath…
She stands with a well intentioned man
But she can’t relax with his hand on the small of her back
As the flashbulbs burst she holds a smile
Like someone would hold a crying child

Brilliant!

2. The Ice Is Getting Thinner
3. Bixby Canyon Bridge
4. Your New Twin Sized Bed

Now here’s the deal though.  Most people think that Death Cab have only made two records.  If you are one of those people allow me to recommend some  amazing listening.  First of all, in my opinion the best Death Cab record, hands down, no questions, is The Photo Album.  If the song “Styrofoam Plates” doesn’t wreck you I don’t know what will.  Easily one of their best songs.  Also the album Transatlanticism is a must have.  They have a few other records but those are the two worth checking out if you haven’t.

Here’s my top Death Cab songs if you are interested.

10. Title And Registration (Transatlanticism)
9. Why You’d Want To Live Here (The Photo Album)
8. We Laugh Indoors (The Photo Album)
7. Information Travels Faster (The Photo Album)
6. The Ice Is Getting Thinner (Narrow Stairs)
5. Brothers On A Hotel Bed (Plans)
4. Cath… (Narrow Stairs)
3. What Sarah Said (Plans)
2. I Will Follow You Into The Dark (Plans)
1. Styrofoam Plates (The Photo Album

  1. Good list Brody. Yes, I know about The Photo Album and Cath… is a great song. My favorite on the new album is still Pity and Fear and The Sound of Settling from Transatlanticism is also one of my favorites. I think Death Cab songs hit people differently, which is part of their greatness.

  2. I wasn’t that impressed with the new album on the first listen, but it may be growing on me.

  3. I think I backed into DCFC after getting hooked on The Postal Service. Are you a fan of TPS at all?

    I’m checking this tunes out.

  4. The Postal Service is best listened to with headphones on so you can hear the alternating sounds coming from each ear and then collide in the middle.

  5. yeah i was kind of disappointed in narrow stairs as well. and i agree with blake…its so fun to listen to the postal service songs with headphones.

  6. I wasn’t totally sure what to think about the new album at first. When I first heard “I Will Possess Your Heart” I was a little disappointed…but then I heard “Cath…” on NPR and thought it was AMAZING and got really excited for “Narrow Stairs.” I think it’s good, but definitely agree it’s not their best.
“Transatlanticism” is my favorite, then “The Photo Album.” I think I’m going to work on my list of my favorite 10 songs today. :)

  7. you listed all my favorites from “Plans”…nice job…great choices!

  8. Thanks for the post, for some reason I just hadn’t come across this band yet, I will certainly check them out, sounds great.
