In one sentence, what’s the best advice you have ever received, and who was it from? Ready? Go.
“When God calls you he calls your stomach too.” From one of my favorite professors, Randy Richards. Maybe its not the absolute best advice I’ve been given, but its up there (and its the first thing that comes to mind).
Best advice: To be my genuine self & let people see “me”, even if it wasn’t always pretty and pleasant.
Don’t live on yesterday’s manna.
Follow your heart. - My Dad.
Simple, but so elegant and real.
My big brother said something like this to me:
People will always let you down, put your trust in God.
(Not to say that there have been plenty of times where I’ve been to opposite of “let down” by some of the folks closest to me…just to clarify)
This to will pass
A friends mom. It helps when I am in the middle of a hard stage with my kids
“Boys are cute, guys are jerks, and men are rare. Hold out for a man.” - The wonderful advice of my Yearbook/College English 1 teacher, Mrs. Irish. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few men, and they will hopefully be the standard for man I will marry some day (God willing of course). I include you and Shaun under the “man” category.
“…be of good faith”
I know it seems obvious, and everyone is wondering what is so great about that. However, when you’re in a situation where your faith is wavering and your heart is questioning, those words seem LARGER than life. Those words to me have meant so much to me.
Coming in second is, “Love without an agenda.” Mmm, I love that. So good. Something we need to do more.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. My aunt.
“Just don’t break it”
All the people I’ve worked for…
Never be late for an apointment or meeting, because if you are it is telling the person you are suppose to meet that their time does not matter to you.
Probably an oldie, but,
“Think before you speak”
Saved my butt more than once.
“The hungry win”
My pastor Brian
“You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friend’s nose.”
-my dad
For teachers/communicators:
The most important sermon is the sermon before the sermon.
“The world is 80% idiots. Your only job in life is to survive them. To not be taken out either directly by them or as collateral damage.”
“Work hard, but work smart.”
Told to me when I was 16 and bussing tables by some random old man who had been watching me work my butt off.
Another one was “You rise and fall to the level of your peers.”
‘there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother’ ‘a cord of three strands is not easily broken’ ‘you’re free to make your own decisions - but take responsibility for the consequences’ - Mum, Dad & God
“Be good; if you can’t be good, be careful.”
I always tell my students (and formerly my residents when I was an RA) “make positive life choices.”
“You can choose you sin, but you can’t choose the consequences”
My mom wasn’t big on profound “spiritual” sayings, but I always remembered this. I think I remember it because she didn’t say it in a lecturing way, but almost an encouragement in how to live
I’ve got a few off the top of my head:
“No one can make a decision about a situation for you. What is right for Shawn may not be right for Hannah and vice versa. You need to pray and seek God. God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Go where you have peace to go. That is your answer. What is your decision?”-Shawn Alexander to me after I asked for advice on a difficult situation Co-founder of SoulFest
“True love, the revolution Jesus started, starts in your heart. If you love Jesus a little more each day, you love your family a little more each day, you love your friends and coworkers a little more each day, everything works out from there. I’ve tried to do that by the grace of God and now it comes to the point where the revolution just flows from that, when I am driving and see a homeless person on the side of the road I have to stop. I don’t even think about it anymore. If you love Jesus a little more each day, and love others a little more each day, this world will be changed.”- Dan Russell (my former boss) Founder and President of SoulFest, management Black Rebel Motorcylce Club, U2, Sam Phillips
“Your parents might hate me for this, but I really think you need to just take a huge step of faith and move here. Doors will open up once you are here. You feel called to be here. God will take care of you.”- Mike Snider current boss (this was one of the best situational pieces of advice)
“Honesty is the most important trait in the world”-my dad
[1] Put God first and don’t Give up!
From my dad but based upon the advices from God through Matthew and Paul.
This is more marriage specific but as a young man, 11 years ago, about to get married, it stuck…
“She’s not a man so don’t treat her like one…”

When you bring your newborn home, sleep when she does….and…..you can’t control what others do.
well, i can’t really think of advice right now, but a quote that I read on the Starfiel band’s blog said, “Life is too short to get comfortable with our comfort” idk. Just a little something….
