My Cross Gender Hands

So, the other day Kristin and I were somewhere that I should have been paying attention, and all of my focus was being directed to my cross-gender hands.  Here’s the problem.  It’s not like I have small hands in a cool musician superhero type of way.  I just have completely disproportionate hands.  Like part man hand, part woman hand.  All creepy weird hand.

It was bugging me the whole night and later that evening Kristin and I were talking about it.  I needed to get to the bottom of why my hands were so weird.  Here’s what we came up with.  My palms are the exact same size as my fingers.  Here’s the problem with that.  My fingers are the same size as Kristin’s!  My five-foot three – hundred and ten pound – tiny person wife!  Yeah, my fingers are the same size.  But here’s the kicker.  My palms?  They are twice the size of hers.  It doesn’t make any sense to me.  I do not have the hands of a twenty nine year old man.  An eleven year old?  Maybe that’s more like it.

Now there are plenty of things that I would change about my appearance if I have the ability, but my cross-gender hands would be near the top of that list.  What’s on your list?

  1. hmmm, now that you mention it, my hands are about the same. you may have awakened my dissatisfaction. for the most part i’ve come to terms with my body and physical appearance. i have two toes stuck together on each foot, as well as ever so slightly webbed fingers (must be why i was such a good swimmer). one eye is a little goofy looking from a childhood injury. and i’m somewhat petite for a guy.
so those would be on my list of changes, but it seems i have have lost the request forms.

  2. Dude – I love your blog, and I try to participate regularly, but I’m not gonna lie – this post freaked me out a little.

I would change my nose. A fight at church in the sixth grade has left me always looking like I’m turning right. It’s very deceptive.

Maybe your grandfather was a bear and you have man paws.

  4. To shed a few pounds would be nice, but that’s not really an issue that I couldn’t handle in a week or two to get me where I’d like to be. It’s just a matter of doing it. Other than that, I can honestly say that I can’t think of anything about my appearance I’d change if given the opportunity.

  5. My ears are lopsided. That is, my left ear is lower than my right…which makes my glasses crooked whenever I wear them…funny thing is – is that I didn’t notice it until like a year ago…

btw – did you hear that Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová are touring!? Looks like they will be in Nashville on Sept. 24

    Just an fyi.

  6. Brody – my hands are messed up too! I have the hands of a fat 9 year old. I’m a 23 year old (not fat) woman – my freakish hands are at the top of my list too.

  7. I would like to say that I’m happy with my appearance, but I’m not happy. I’m CONTENT, but I would have liked it if God would have made me taller, given me longer fingers/bigger hands [which would make playing guitar easier], and maybe he could have given that a super fast metabolism where I can eat like a pig and be skinny (:

  8. I’ve also had fears about cross-gender hands, too. My hands are huge and look exactly like my brother’s hands. One day someone told me that my brother had girly hands, though, so that assuaged my discontent a little.

So now if I had to change something about me, I’d be shorter. As a 5′ 11.5″ female, it is next to impossible to find pants that are long enough or shoes that are big enough. Or men that are not too intimidated by my height to ask me out.

I must have the same hands as you. My palms are the same length of my fingers too. I have to wear men’s gloves most of the time as the women’s ones are always way to small. Welcome to the world of weird.

    Hey..I like your hands….your mother….!

  11. I have the “Emmans nose.”

  12. Okay, you want to talk weird. My middle finger is the same length as my ring finger on both my hands…I believe if you look at yours (everybody check), most will find that they are not the same length. Your middle finger should be longest…next, my head is crooked…when I where a hat you can tell that it is diagonal on my head…next, one of my manly pecks is about 2 inches lower than the other…next, I have a freaky mutant gene that made me as hairy as a gorilla…next, everybody thinks I am part Asian because I have narrow, Asian eyes…finally, word has it that the hicks family has a mutant gene for the most awful smelling flatulence.

  13. The only thing that is disproportionate about you is that you are crazy funny. i think my hands are the same proportion as yours, and you know how odd that is. Love ya Dad

  14. I have received unsolicited comments about my hands from both my husband and my daughter. Ryan says I have “Grandma hands.” I think he is only looking at them when they are hanging down, and all the blood is puffing up my veins… Ryvre told me recently that she loves the way my hands look. Perhaps, she looks at them mostly when I am driving, hence, no veins sticking out. I thought it was a nice compliment, though.

If I could change one bodily feature, I’d wish for a smaller forehead.

  15. This is too much. haha

My hands are “proportionate” so to speak, but I have chubby fingers (size 10+ on my ring finger). I have had guys try on my right-hand ring and, for most of them, it was too big for even their thumbs. Or it would fit their manly fingers the same as mine. The rest of the changes I’d make are ones I can achieve on my own, so I’m good. =)

  16. [...] blog, you need to now!  Earlier this week he wrote an interesting post which you can read about here.  Basically, he wrote about how his fingers and palms are the same size.  Well Brody, I’m [...]

  17. Hmmm. Not sure what I’d change about my appearance. It is what it is, and I’m ok with it… :o )

If it’s any consolation, after sitting next to you for a whole day on Tuesday, I never noticed you have funny hands, and I do have a tendency to notice details. My dad once mentioned that he never liked the shape of his fingernails, and I was surprised ’cause I think they’re just fine…

The truth is, people have a tendency to be discontent, and that’s not all bad. If I could change anything about myself, I’d be more organized and disciplined. Maybe that’s something I *can* change… :o )

Man, I'd say you're lucky. Mine is all short, smooth and slender. Its really weird since I'm rather stout and at a height of 5' 10''. I play guitar in a band and a lot of people have been noticing that it just sucks so bad.
