When I Grow Up
I don’t remember all the things I wanted to be when I grew up. I’m sure at one point it was a professional baseball player, then a WWF Wrestler, then a fireman and some sort of musician. I do know that it changed frequently, and I still haven’t figured it out, though it seems to be moving somewhere in the music industry. And I’m pretty sure the wrestler thing is out.
Kristin and I talk to our boys about every once in a while about what they want to be when they get bigger. Blue started out saying that he wanted to stay home and wear jammies all day long. That progressed to being an astronaut, then a scientist. Now I’m not sure where he is at in his profession choosing state. Aiden usually says “nothing” when we ask him what he wants to be. He’s our “emo” kid. Though one night late, him and I were watching some late night show and Matchbox Twenty was the musical guest. Aiden watched intently and toward the end of the song he whispered, “I want to do that.” I asked him what it was exactly that he wanted to do, and without hesitation he said, “I want to buy lights and be in them.” I asked again if that meant that he wanted to sing and he agreed. I think kid dreams are awesome.
My question today is what did you want to be when you grew up? We all have thought about it. How many have done it? So there it is. What did you want to be when you became an adult? Did it happen?

a writer…guess that worked out pretty swell.
and a storm chaser.
and a cop.
I wanted to be a Paleontologist… and then a missionary… working on that latter one, but currently I’m a Nanny
I wanted to be an astronaut. I became a meteorologist instead. So I guess you can say I at least stayed in the realm of science. I still want to be an astronaut and I’m working on that right now.
1st A nurse
2nd An artist
3rd A songwriter
Working on the 3rd. Nothing came of the first two, which are probably more attainable.
A professional tennis player.
I never got paid to play tennis, but I did make the Baylor University tennis team, which was a huge accomplishment for me and one that I’m pretty happy about.
What about you Brody? What did you want to be?
I’m with Aiden. “I wanna do that”. Been playing for 20 yr now and it hasn’t happened yet, but you know that. You were there.
Elementary age: I wanted to be a secretary or a teacher.
High School: U.S. Senator or Supreme Court Justice (but not a lawyer!).
Now I am an overeducated wife/stay at home mom to 2 beautiful girls and PT private Event Coordinator and do the same in our concert ministry.
I’m exactly where God wants me to be.
I wanted to be a vet because I thought I could play with dogs all day. Then I found out that I would have to do surgery or put them down and that was the end of that dream.
I guess I’ll figure it out someday.
I only wanted to be a wife and mother. Did that. I think I did that pretty well, what do you think ,Bro?
Now I am working on being a writer. You help me with that. Thank you.
I used to want to draw cartoons for Disney, then a fashion designer (both of which are funny…because I really have zero artistic ability!), then a novelist, then a journalist…and since August, an elementary school teacher. It’s not nearly as glamorous as all those other things…but I think it’s where God wants me, and I couldn’t be more excited about it!
I’m with Aiden, including being the “emo” kid disguised as a preppy. Like Amy and some of your other readers, I grew up on The Cure, Depeche Mode and New Order and can’t wait for the new Death Cab for Cutie album and think the new Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional albums are brilliant. What I wanted to be was a lawyer because of LA Law, especially Harry Hamlin and Corbin Bernsen. I worked at a law firm for 4 years in college and decided it wasn’t quite so glamorous. So, now I’m a health insurance broker which is way more glamorous.
Regarding watching Matchbox Twenty, very cool. I love those guys.
I always wanted to be a mom. And as an animal lover, I thought I wanted to be a vet. In high school, my animal love was redirected to wildlife, and I decided I didn’t want to work in a clinic, neutering people’s pets all day. I work for Cal Fish and Game, now, as an Environmental Scientist. I love my job. And I really love being a MOM, too!
i always wanted to be a storm chaser or the person who names the color of crayola crayons.
and i totally thing you stole my blog idea from yesterday. uh huh.
A scientist or astronaut, an NBA player, a 3D graphics artist for movies or videogames, a professional musician…
sadly, I’m none of those things right now, and I think I’m grown up.
I have wanted to be a dentist since sixth grade. I know it’s weird, but I love it, so I guess it worked out for me!
I wanted to be a mom, a teacher and a nurse. The mom thing worked out good and being a mom, I’m kind of a nurse and a teacher too. Nobody wants to grow up and be a bookkeeper when they are a little kid. I wonder when the switch happened for me?
I wanted to be a motorcycle stuntman.
And a doctor.
And a rock star.
I’m an infrastructure engineer. It’s not nearly as sexy.
I wanted to be a garbage man, so I’m glad that one didn’t pan out…
When I was in first grade I wanted to be a paleontologist. I thought dinosaur bones were really cool. But then I got older, and me + science (which requires math) = fail.
Then I decided I wanted to be an artist, and I kind of, sort of, am. (I do graphic design.) I would like to be a singer/songwriter, or an art history professor as well…maybe those can be my second and third careers.
I still think dinosaur bones are really cool.
Mmm. I remember drawing a picture of a nurse helping someone in 1st grade for my “what I want to be when I grow up” activity.
Science was my worst subject. I throw up at the site of blood.
That dream wasn’t long lived.
Kat.
From when I was about in 8th grade I wanted to play music but didn’t know to what extent. If only I had been practicing since I was in 8th grade.
Before we had kids I told Kristin that when our kids were old enough to know what I did for a living I wanted it to be in the music industry. Turns out…
