HMMM…
No, this is not my computer. But I have a feeling it’s going to be pretty soon. Remember when my power cord caught on fire? Well right about that same time I noticed that the fan on my computer had been starting to run constantly and get louder and louder the longer I worked on it. I started looking around online, to see what the average temperature for the Black MacBook’s is. I never found an exact number. Then I found this fancy widget to go on my dashboard that tells me seven (yes, seven) different temperatures.
Because blisters are now forming on the tops of my thighs, I am really only concerned with the hottest temperature that this little widget is showing. Eighty One degrees, Celsius. That seems a little hot to me. Isn’t one hundred boiling? What’s “igniting” temperature? I noticed that when I take the battery out it drops down to around sixty-two degrees, Celcius, but with the battery out little mishaps can occur. Like, let’s say you are writing a long guest post for someone, and the dog steps on the cord, unplugging your computer. With no battery, that could potentially be tragic.
So this morning I have tried to call the local Mac store but in true Mac form, they don’t like to answer the phone. What’s your laptops average temperature? Want to place bets on when my lap catches fire?

where did you get that widget from? my MBP sounds like a freaking jet plane half the time…
It’s right here.

Though, I have no idea what a lot of the things mean.
Without my nifty cooler pad, my Inspiron E1505 averages 50 C CPU and 45 C hard drive. With the pad, the CPU stays around 50, but the HD drops to 35 C.
Running too hot will cut the lifespan of the computer. Some sort of cooler should save both your laptop and your lap.
your laptop seems to be swiftly moving towards laptop heaven…
my last comp did that and ended up melting internally. good thing we backed everything up on an external hard drive before that fateful day.
Sounds like your fan shroud is clogged with dust. The same thing started happening to my laptop. The fan would run non stop and it would eventually overheat and turn it off. I was going to send it in but the thought of not having it for a month pushed me to see what I could do.
I removed the fan cover and sure enough, it was full of dust. It was blocking the cooling fins not allowing air to blow out the side and cool the CPU. Cleaned it all out and am back to normal, no more problems.
Phil
I’l get my temps posted when I get the widget
my highest temp is about 48 degrees C, thats my CPU, what was your 81 showing at?
CPU A = 81C
I used to have that problem with my MacBook Pro (I think mine got up to 170-180F at least?), but then a guy at the Apple store installed smcFanControl which makes the fan run at a higher speed all the time. It’s a little louder, but definitely keeps the computer cooler. It’s worked great for me. I’m at 109F now (it puts the current temp up in the menu bar by the time).

Does it make any weird noises when you move it? It is definitely running too hot. Go online and set up a time at the mac bar for your local mac store. Also, try to sit it on a flat surface, like a book until it is solved. Your legs or a pillow blocks the air intake or out take and can make it hotter.
If you let it run too hot for too long, it WILL fry your HD. In fact, you might want to back-up your HD right now if you haven’t already. Scorching hot temp’s are the number one killer of HD’s. And fer cryin’ out loud, did you get the mac care plan????
applecare?
Back it up and let it burn. Sounds like you have a serious problem.
I am at about 50 degrees celsius for cpu a.
