Do You Smell Something Burning?

kloewen_untitledsmokeno376sm.jpgAs of lately I have been on my laptop literally all day, everyday. I use it for fun. I use it for work, and Kristin and I even watch movies on it at night every once in a while. It’s always on, and always working… until today.

I have been having trouble with it getting a full charge, not because of the battery, but because of the cable that plugs it in. It was acting as if there was a short or something and just not charging. It was driving me crazy but I haven’t had time to get a new one.

I had a meeting this morning to talk over some more blog stuff and take some exciting pictures that are still in question of being released. When I got home I had a few hours of work that needed to be done so I closed myself in the office and started in. About three hours in to working I noticed smoke floating in front of my face and gliding across the desk. At first I thought it was incense, but then realized the burning plastic smell was not the smell of incense. I looked over and my power cord that was sitting on my desk, on several pieces of paper, and plugged into my computer was smoking like crazy.

I unplugged it from my computer and the wall, and watched as my battery slowly died without any way to recharge it. Luckily the kind folks at Apple, offer power cables to purchase for a mere eighty dollars, you know, in case you want an extra laying around or something.

So now I have a new one. And hopefully nothing else decides to light on fire while we are asleep tonight.

  1. I just replaced my power cord. Same problem (no smoke). But, having a Dell, it only cost me $70.

  2. mmm… gotta love that burning plastic smell!

Well Brody, I’m glad you caught the smoking before it turned into flames. I will definately be praying that God keep you and your family safe tonight and that there will be no more smoking computer parts. Take care and God bless.

  4. I never checked to make sure that my computer wasn’t one of the ones affected by that Dell battery recall back awhile ago. It very well could have been…right model, purchased during the right time frame…
I should maybe get on that.

Glad you were in front of your computer when this was happening and able to see it before it became a huge problem!

  5. Yep. I’m going to be replacing my soon as well. The end of power cord where the magnetic end is, has started to melt.

  6. Yea my MagSafe adapted for my MacBook melted a couple of months ago, but I have apple care so i got it replaced for free, other wise a new cable was going to cost me about £70 ($140)

  7. Were you playing “Burnin’ Down The House?”

  8. Maybe when you bought your computer the kind people at apple slid in the “smoke signal” throwback feature, and you just over reacted by buyig a new one. Or perhaps it’s apples ploy that their cords will self distruct after so long so you have to buy a new one. Kind of like those messages Inspector Gadget use to get.

  9. When are the people at mac going to design wireless power? i just dont understand why technology hasnt gotten there yet…
