87 And Counting

23272375.jpgThe other night in another hotel I started thinking about how many different airplanes I have been on this year. Last year turned out to be the “year of the drive”. I literally drove across the country four and a half times, in over 30 states. This year it has turned out that I have spent more time in the air and I was curious about the numbers.

There were several times where we would fly one place and then change planes and catch another flight, so I knew those would have to be counted as two flights, so I knew the number had the potential to be pretty high. So today, on yet another flight, I flipped through my schedule from the past year and started counting.

So far including the few flights that I will be on to finish out the month with Shaun, it looks like will total 87 flights. 87 flights in nine months. 87 seatbelt and oxygen instructions. 87 tiny cups of cranberry-apple juice. Countless flips through the SkyMall magazine, and 87 times that I have gone to 30,000 feet in the air and back down safely. I think it will end somewhere around the 95 mark by the time this year is over, and that can’t come soon enough.

I know there are several people out there that travel more than that, and I feel bad for them about that, but for me this has been a pretty busy year. I thank God for keeping my family and I safe and still connected through it all. I have a pretty amazing wife to support this madness, and it does nothing but make me appreciate her more.

Just something I was thinking about today.

  1. Aww, that’s great. God bless you’re wife! And your kids! She must be something to be able to stay grounded while you’re gone. :)
Oh, and I’m curious to know, because of all the flights you’ve been on and will continue on, if you enjoy flying or not? Because it’s not my favorite. I feel sick every time I step into one of those cramped little planes. But I know it’s the only way to get my where I desire to go.

  2. when i first read this i thought you were saying that the going 30,000 feet in the air and back down safely was going to end around the 95 mark and i must say that freaked me out a bit.

  3. There’s a guy at work (actually, he’s based in Scotland) who doesn’t count the number of flights or even the miles traveled. He counts the days he is in the air. It is many days.

  4. Did you know that when you are that high up, you have less protection from radiation?

  5. hey, i support you in your madness too.

  6. so basicaly you like to fly?

I think you should get a digital camra that does video, and every time the stuardess askes you what kind of drink you want you should do a video. it will probably only be about 5 sececonds or maybe less but if you slap them all, back to back then you’ll get something that looks and sounds kinda funny. oh, and you’ll have to try and pretend like the camera isnt on.

  7. I like Randy’s idea!

And you have a gem of a wife.

  8. Alymc. It’s not that I enjoy flying but there is a part of me that enjoys the fact that I can’t be anywhere else. It’s a time where I am stuck. I don’t have to pay attention to anything else going on around me, which lets me focus on returning email, or reading a book or listen to music.

randy. I think that’s an amazing idea, but I have already missed 87 drink offers. If I have to have a schedule like this next year I might try that.

  9. Ah, I see. Well at least you are not claustrophobic as I am, or you would have a bit of a problem being stuck and not being able to go anywhere ;)
