I've got a friend, who told me a story about an older man he once went to church with (about 8-9 years ago). This older man was constantly bringing new people into the church - people who had never really known Christ - and baptizing a handful of people every month. My friend's class asked him to come in and teach on personal evangelism, and he told them that he pretty much talks to anyone and asks them if they were going to heaven or hell if they died today (basically what the video guy did, but with love and not in an ambush attack). Some of the people in the class were a bit put off at such a confrontational approach, and questioned him as to why and how he could be so hard in talking to people, strangers, about God. He replied that this was what he knew best, he wasn't a smart fellow who could wow them with biblical knowledge. What he knew best was that without God he was lost. Sure, he said, some people are turned off by this, but most listened and many came to know God. He then turned the question back on them, by asking for suggestions as to how he could do it better, and how they approached people about Christ. The class fell into an embarrassed silence at that point.

Sure, it can be divisive, and some people will not listen, if you talk to them about the state of their soul. But, if it is done in love (again, unlike the guy in the video - he just wanted to see that KISS guy squirm) it can be just what some people need to hear.

It makes me want to get together with a bunch of people and sing, "They'll know we are Christians by our love".

This video actually is making me sick. Literally.

I totally feel for the KISS guy. The "Christian" guy wasn't even listening to him, just trying to put his evangelism plan into action. It's all about him. Pathetic. Didn't even listen.

He says he's asking for forgiveness, asking God for forgiveness, but the interviewer doesn't care. "More than that...more than that..." The poor guy already knows he's guilty.

He's trusted Jesus since 15, but for the unsatisfied interviewer, "Where do you go to church?" is the key.

Do these people think Jesus did it this way? Does it even matter to them?

I am a little irritated by this clip and approach to witness. There is probably a soup kitchen and a crisis center that could really use a hand. I got a feeling that Jesus would probably drop the camera and start there.

BUT, thats just me, and some people have that kind of gift of evangalism and what is pulled off in person doesn't translate well on video which is why it is ineffective as a video other than in a way that harms how people see the entire body of Christ.

I met Kirk Cameron at a weekend event last year. He's a very good preacher and very down to earth. While I don't agree with all of his approaches to witnessing in every situation, he definitely didn't come across as superior-minded, snobby, or holier-than-thou. He struck me as someone who can't stand the thought of anyone not knowing Christ and spending an eternity in hell. I'd be a better witness if I had that same passion more often.

Beth

Wow. I wish I was a good enough Christian to hang with Kirk Cameron....

Turns out I'm not.

FWIW, that guy is using Ray Comfort's approach to witnessing: (link here).
