Abilene, TX (Part 2)

I’ve killed three. I don’t like to kill bugs, because for some reason it seem slightly cruel, and also killing them usually requires some form of contact with them. I’ve killed three cockroaches here at the Taylor County Expo Center. Three. One of them was the size of my thumb.

This is my second time at this venue, and it’s exactly as horrid as I remember. Imagine a rodeo taking place in a prison, then add dirt. Then mix in horrible giant bugs that force you to come in contact with them if you ever wish to see your belongings again. And then some more dirt. I think one of the lighting guys is missing.

The big cockroach is still laying about four feet from me. I am going to try to leave him there as long as I can stand it. I want his family to see him and know I mean business.

At least this is the first show, so we can only go uphill from here.

Maybe that is why jump roping is popular in Abilene, a way to kill the cocroaches….

Welcome to the Promise Land. OK so the Western part aint too great and resembles Hell, but dang it if you could’t gte saved over a plate of beef fajitas out there.

Try it, Brody. Your soul depends on it.

WHen I was on the road with Bebo Norman we played a VFW Hall in College Station,Tx where the roaches were the size of those balls with bingo numbers on them. You know, those balls? They had some there. Anyway, we raced them…the roaches, not the balls. And filmed it. Until stuff stuff and friends started disappearing. We suspected a revolt of some kind.

They died. We lived. And played music and bingo.

Kill them before they kill you.

i like kristin’s comment. it seems most likely. however these are still small, cute, little roachy guys compared to the tropical monsters. either way i agree with shawn. WATCH YOUR BACK!!!

    Brody,
You should see Abilene when cricket season hits. Downtown, the sidewalks look like they have been carpeted – some moving and some not moving because you have been forced to walk on them to go anywhere. (I was born and raised in Abilene, so I know that of which I speak.)

And Shaun is right, the roaches in College Station look like giant mutants compared to the babies in Abilene they skitter along at about 70 mph, grow to the size of a football, and regularly eat college students who wander into the shadows alone. (Again, I should know, as I lived in College Station for 10 years after getting away from the crickets in Abilene.)

If I had caught this post earlier, I would have advised you to stop at Joe Allen’s Barbeque. The best anywhere. Period. And, it would make a nice change from the veggie burgers you talked about grilling out at the suburban campout! (I just fear for the children, really.)
